Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have an old Toshiba Qosmio F20 laptop I want to mod.
The bios is a "Toshiba" one, the file extension is .COM, and I can't find any info about how to mod it.

Any info on progress or confirmation that there won't be any tool would be greatly appreciated.

I guess there isn't enough interest on those legacy bioses.

I understand no one succeeded in extracting the toshiba .com file, but is it recorded in the bios chip in the same way of archiving?
Anyone tried a backup read from the bios?

As far as I know, dumps lack some data needed to properly flash the bios, so it's of no use.

I'm starting to think about something a bit different from "onboard" flashing.
I bought an ic programmer and trained for soldering with pcb after bricking my 2 laptops and 1 desktop.
So for me is very significant how the bios file is deployed on the chip.
The problem is that I myself cannot look in that because I've not got a toshiba one in my hand yet.

    additional:
I have 1 laptop & 1 desktop from toshiba to be more exact.
The laptop has phoenix bios and desktop award however.

Thanx for your detailed reply, but I had already sold my bricked boards when I bought my ic programmer (and they had soldered chips).
I have ever done your "hot replacement" method for other boards and never fail to make a backup *first* as a hot replacement when the board has a socketted bios chip (I have a lot of blank ones).

I looked around toshiba's update pages and am interested in the .COM ones.
BEFORE looking well I bought a toshiba laptop that had a phoenix bios...that was not interesting.

    additional:
I'm now looking around used Toshiba laptops first released 2007-2009 to get another one.
For example Satellite A205 uses a Phoenix BIOS (with a header to be truncated upon programming?) and is moddable while no one has succeeded in Tecra A9 having a Toshiba original BIOS (.COM).

So anyone, letting me have a backup read from your bios chip working on Tecra A9 would be appreciated (no need of modded one).

Additionaly, if one is trying bios mod of Toshiba computer, s/he first have to start bios updater application and rapidly find and copy the bios updating files in %temp% folder , before the program ends up in error ( when the machine is different than the BIOS intended to flash or the BIOS has been updated ) or the program starts flashing; these files will be deleted automatically shortly.
