After installing the updates, Windows refuses to boot now, forcing me to do a system restore. I've tried to update again, and same thing. Windows won't load past a flashing black screen after rebooting.

I'll have to either reinstall Windows, or check to see if there are any updates for my GPU (7640G + 7670M).

What version of Windows 8 you're using and how you activated it? Please post details.

Windows 8 Pro w/ Windows Media Center (x64).

I activated Windows 8 Pro using the KMS Server Application from 7PM, then used the WMC key, then replaced the data.dat file with a working one to activate.

Everything worked fine until a few nights ago when I installed updates before turning my computer off for the night. Turned it on in the morning, and I can't even get to the login screen. It just sits there at a black screen flashing, nothing else.

Try and boot in safe mode , check drivers, try win repair booting off a win8 media or do a system restore.

Did you turn it off during the update process?

Nope. I shut down the computer before going to sleep, and noticed that updates were installing.

    Windows is installing updates...
    15%... 16%... 17%...

My computer then proceeded to shut down. I assumed that updates would continue installing the next time I log in. Doesn't appear to be the case, because instead of saying "Windows is installing updates...", it just stayed at a flickering black screen.

I'll update it again when I get home (I restored to an earlier point) and I'll let it sit for a while at the black screen. _Maybe_ updates were installing without saying so. I'm not sure, though.

Thanks. I'll keep this in mind if there isn't anything else I can do other than to reinstall.

Found the problem. It was the UXTheme patch I had installed. I refreshed Windows, downloaded all the updates, and installed my drivers, and Windows boots fine now.

I remembered that I had the exact same issue on my netbook running Windows 7. The UXTheme patch didn't install correctly, and removing them and restoring the files allowed me to boot into Windows again.

Using UxStyle-Patch here. Win 8 ProWMC (data.dat-swap) and Office 15 updated flawlessly.
