That's cool...I have to use a separate power supply for the HDD. been thinking of getting and long SATA Power cable extension and routing from inside to out of the PC case but it might look terrible ?
before trying to recovery the files (better to use r-studio and a spare drive for that) you should try to recovery the partitions. Very likely you have just lost them. Just the info about where each partition starts and ends and the partition kind identifier (eg 07 for NTFS). Both Acronis disk director and Paragon HD manager have a feature called partition undelete. They scan the drive(s) and, if the FS is ok and only the partiton records are lost, they can recover all your data at once, exactly as they were, in few seconds, rather than the hours required by the file recovery process, which is never 100% perfect even in the best scenarios.
Well taken all day nearly but now I have ALL the files from the 500GB drive. These are the most important, docs, pics etc etc. Thanks guys for ALL the help, tips and info.
which recovery u got best results from? with findandmount i usually had files within 2 hrs copied. one trick i learned was ptedit32 .. rewrite the part table info from findandmount sectors info and it worked most times.
I used Minitool Power Data recovery.. I really should not have mentioned how long it took. It did the job and did it well. Just this very minute I have set the process up to hopefully recover the files from the 1TB drive. Thank goodness I had a few spare drives to play with. Fingers crossed once again..
@TNX: Glad you got it sorted out. That drive box looks nice. Some more advice. If you can afford it, populate that drive box with a pair of 1TB SSDs. That eliminates mechanical shock and platter damage as potential failure points. No offence meant about being able to afford it, but a pair of 1TB SSDS costs over $1000 USD. Good luck with the 1TB drive.
The drives I was thinking of getting we're Western Digital Blue 4TB. Thought SSD would be a bit ott just for storage.
Agree, you can get a separate power supply for a HDD, but that pci-e card would look prettier than just dangling a sata cable out of the front/side/back of your pc
