    Hi everyone,

I was reading this massive thread with alot of interest because of a problem I stumbled upon yesterday evening with an Acer Aspire 7720G (7720G-302G32Mn) notebook.

Thislaptop had numerous problems with sound and webcam crashing and the resulting blue screens. I read about the problem and I gathered that a BIOS update would fix these problems so I went to the manufacturers download page and downloaded BIOS 1.45
There was only one file and after download I read the instructions that came with the BIOS update. The update utility started up and dectected I was still using BIOS version 1.17 and it started updating the BIOS with an error at occuring at about 20 or 30 seconds after the update started. The error itself just stated 'error' and no other information was given about the nature of the error. I thought it would be better to try this update in safe mode and when I rebooted the laptop I stumbled upon a bricked notebook. Nothing happened...I could hear the fan, the ring around the powerbutton did lit up green and the led on top of the HDD symbol kept flashing constantly.

I looked for a solution on recovering my BIOS since I immidiatly realised that my BIOS 1.17 probably got erased in the process of trying to update it. I found a solution on the web which says I needed to download the DOS based BIOS update and that I could find that by re-directing to the 'old Acer download' site.

I downloaded the ZIP and extracted it to the desktop which gave me 3 files:

    * if50.bat
    * CL50145A.fd
    * Flas**t.exe

The procedure then told to open a new text document and put in "if50.bat" (without the brackets) and save that text document as autoexec.bat
I then was requested to make a bootable CD (did that with Nero Burning Rom 7) and add the 4 previously mentioned files (if50.bat / CL50145A.fd / Flas**t.exe and autoexec.bat) to that bootable CD
After finishing that bootable CD I removed the notebook's battery and unplugged the AC power cord from the notebook. I then plugged that power cord back into the laptop whilst holding Fn + Esc and I kept holding those keys to press the power button. The notebook booted and I let go of Fn + Esc to push this one again briefly a few seconds later.
The CD started spinning and I thought everything was going fine till I passed 15 minutes, 30 minutes and even 45 minutes and I noticed that apart from spinning, the CD did not do anything more than that.

So it is then that I searched further and I came to this forum. I get most of the things posted here but I am wondering what solution to go for. There is a solution just to write the *.fd file on a CD but does that CD needs to be bootable or not? Or do I have to go for the solution with renaming the *.fd file but then I wonder what to rename it to?!

Can anyone help me with this?

Hi guys! Got problem after BIOS update on my HP 4320s :( Notebook can't boot, symptomps are like failed BIOS update. I have tried to fix that problem according to this tutorial but I don't exactly know what name should have .BIN file in my case. The newest BIOS is available on HP's support site, I've unpacked it, there is no .FD files, only 68AHH.BIN file. I've tried flashing using this file, rename to 68AH.BIN, no effect. Please, help me. Cheers!

BIOS Recovery will run if your HDD have the EFI Partition. Thus try to:
    - take out your HDD and plug into other computer
    - create 1GB EFI Parition, Fat-32 formated with volume HP_TOOLS
    - create a folder name HEWLETT-PACKARD and sub-folder HEWLETT-PACKARD\BIOS\Current
    - download your BIOS file and copy it into the HEWLETT-PACKARD\BIOS\Current\ folder.
    - put the HDD back to your dead laptop and start the recovery again.

With EFI Partition, read "Creating or restoring an EFI partition on the hard drive" section with above PDF file. Good luck.

My notebook doesn't have any version of BIOS on Lenovo site - it is a new one. It has 2 variants - with SLIC2.1 and 2.0. I have both ROM images made by BIOSbacup, but I don't know how to trasform them to .wph format or InsydeFlash compatible format. Who can explain how rom image can be transfered to any of these formats? Notebook Lenove B560, BIOS 39CN16WW / 39CN15WW (2,1/2.0). Notebook page

    Thanks you for your answers!

Concluded it's a Phoenix BIOS so filename shouldn't be a problem.
Tried this without help so far, can the bootblock be damage or do I overlook something?
Floppy disk created with crisis, autoexec with phlash16 and bios.wph

    Pressing fn+esc doing connecting AC-mains:
Power led blink red once doing ac connect.
Doing power-on still holding fn+esc, FAN at 100%, reads on both USB floppy and USB-Stick.
Floppy reads for about 3-5 seconds, stops and after 20 seconds it read again for 2 seconds.
After this nothing happens, FAN keeps running 100%

    Tried pressing, fn+b, win + b
Pressing those keys nothing hapens, fan in "normal" mode. No read on usb floppy etc.

This prove that fn+esc does trigger some recovery mode, but seems it doesn't find the expected on the floppy?

    Help are very welcome! :)

NB. Died doing flash upgrade from 1.32 to 1.33. Only tried the recovery procedure with BIOS 1.32 Any different to try with 1.33 or an older BIOS?

Recovery method for HP Probook 4525s, and possibly other Probook models.

Hi, I have a HP Probook 4525s, which I recently bricked, and want to share my story on how i successfully recovered the BIOS. This should work for other Probooks.

    1. Get a USB memory stick that is <= 4GB and format it to FAT (FAT16) in windows. (It doesn't work to use a larger memory stick formatted to FAT, or a memory stick formatted to FAT32)
    2. Make this directory structure on the USB memory: \HEWLETT-PACKARD\BIOS\CURRENT\
    3. Download the Softpack with the BIOS update for your system from the HP website. Extract the spxxxxx.exe with winrar or a similar software, or run the program and look in the C:\SWSetup\spxxxxx\Rompaq\ directory for a file called 68XXX.bin (XXX differs on different systems).
    4. Copy 68XXX.bin into the \HEWLETT-PACKARD\BIOS\CURRENT\ directory on the USB memory.
    5. Open the archive C:\SWSetup\spxxxxx\Rom.cab and extract efibios.sig to the \HEWLETT-PACKARD\BIOS\CURRENT\ directory. Rename efibios.sig to 68XXX.sig (replace XXX with the same letters as in your 68XXX.bin).
    6. Insert the USB memory stick into a USB port on your computer. While pressing Win+B, power up the system.
    7. The Caps lock led will flash continously, and the computer will read the file from the USB stick.
    8. In under a minute the system will shut down. Remove the USB stick. The system will power up again and immediatly shut down. The system will power up again, and you will be greeted with a screen that says the your BIOS was recovered. :)

Hope this will help someone else! I couldn't find this informations elsewhere.

I need help from the masters!

    Info:
    Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965
    INSYDE H20 BIOS Chip
I don't have 20 posts yet so I can't post a direct link to the Bios file on Toshiba's support site I apologize!

I've tried many different file names XXXX.fd and XXXX.bin but have had no luck in the recovery!
I've used the tool you provided (thank you very much by the way!) and the filename it suggested, however no luck yet.
I've tried burning the bootable BIOS recovery disk from Toshiba's site, no luck with that.
I can't seem to get a response(blinking light) out of my flash drive when I hold either the Fn+Esc or Windows + b combinations and boot.
The lcd shows nothing so I can't exactly change the boot settings.
The only faith I have is using the CD drive, it seems to read the CD's I try and look for the proper file but when it doesn't find it, it stops trying to read it and nothing happens.
No beeps or anything just the fan running, the power LED on, the drive spinning and eventually stopping. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

    Fixed:

Holding Fn + F put the notebook into BIOS Recovery Mode and it then read the USB drive with the BIOS.fd file and reinstalled the BIOS.

The secret was the Keyboard shortcut. It obviously varies depending on the brand but I recommend Fn + F because it worked for this Toshiba Satellite Notebook.
