    RegEdit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX and delete the folder.

Restart and XP will, at least, reinstall DX v. 8.1. (what is bundled with XP) or may reinstall V. 9 if not overwritten. After you boot, go to START>RUN> and type DXDIAG. On the SYSTEM tab (usually selected by default) the last entry will tell you what version of DX you are running. If necessary you can then run Win Update (I think Win Update will tag v. 9 as an optional update if needed) or go to MS DLs and DL v.9 directly.

Forgot to mention to those who might be interested in DX10.

It cannot run in XP: Vista/Win7 only.
