    Hi everyone!

I recently acquired a damaged Sony laptop and was sucessfull in replacing the dead motherboard with that of a Vaio VGN-140G.

I wanted to install this BIOS update:

    R0035J4

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNC140G&upd_id=2837&os_group_id=10

Problem is, the system won't let me since it can't read the system information.

Now, while searching online, I read that the BIOS can be unlocked. Does this mean that added features can then be selected? Or is it just a BIOS SLIC mod?

I would love to have both, if possible. I currently have installed Windows XP Pro on it and would like to update to Windows 7 Home Edition.

I would love to install the new BIOS update with an unlocked version of the BIOS, though a SLIC modified one would be great.

Is it possible? Can I do so via DOS instead of Windows?

    Thanks in advance!

cant read system info ? seems DMI is corrupt... or a bad ram stick

or it came with mediacenter and it wants vista DMI info not SLP1 for XP

Yes, it originally came with Media Center.

Should I install Media Center to see if that helps?

Still trying to find info on what "unlocking BIOS" means. :)

so likely u need to flash it with a slic mod so it sees 2.0 slic for vista .. or maybe the DMI needs to be altered so bios flash sees info and it flashes
( not sure on DMI tool to be used)

unlocking bios usualy means 3 things.. menu, wireless whitelist, or MSR power management unlock

or is it a flashing message cannot unlock flashing region ? (doubt it)]

i have the bios extracted and can add slic 2.1 for 7 or maybe 2.0 for vista .. but i need a RWReport
    http://rweverything.com/downloads/RwPortableV1.5.3.7.zip
click Acess button. then ACPI tables then Ctrl F2 to save.
post here so i can slic 2.0 and 2.1

then we flash in dos with phlash16 or ph161700 (ill check which)
if this dont work to let it flash bios. then u likely have different board id but i doubt it.

also it looks like it a standard Phoenix Bios so BIOS.WPH recovery method with CRISDISK might work to force bios in it.

Ok, was able to get the requested file. The link is below:

Thanks for the unlocking explanation. I thought perhaps it would be to make other options, like more CPU's and max RAM, available. :)

    Thanks in advance!

I tried opening PHL161700.EXE and I get this message: "Platform Signature Not found in the Interface. PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT."

    What should I do now?

Yes, I booted off DOS, FreeDOS actually. Do I need MSDOS? And yes, I renamed the SLIC file to BIOS.WPH.

    Yup, same thing.

I can say that it's not the RAM since I tested them when I read your message and I did find one module to be defective. Replaced that with a good, tested module.

Just for the heck of it, I'm going to make the USB bootable using MSDOS, just in case. Will report here soon! :)

The Windows utility worked! Thanks so much!

Verified the new bios, just in case. It was a success!

I will soon find a spare HDD to install Vista/Win 7 to test the SLIC out. Will let you know ASAP!
