If they are legitimate keys and not pirated keys that lots of people sell then you can use them.

Win 8.1 was free for Win 8 users, so keys will work for 8.1 likewise. They should work.

I just recently used 2 of my 4 Win 8 keys for my Windows 8.1 Pro. So if they are 100% legit keys for Windows 8, then yes you can use them on Windows 8.1 so you can get your upgrade :)

If your keys are for Windows 8, you must use thoes keys on Your Windows 8.1, then upgrade to Windows 10. Once you have upgraded to Windows 10, then you can do a clean install of Windows 10, on that same PC, and use that same key and it will activate. If you clean install Windows 10 and try to use a Windows 8 key that has not been used in an upgrade, then it will not accept it, That key MUST have been thru an upgrade first before it can be used for Windows 10, and must be on the same PC.

yup, 8 must be updated to 8.1 before you can upgrade to 10

Would a Windows 8.1 Pro MAK key + WMC key make the edition retail?

I never tried this but am wondering if I should go ahead for Windows 10.

It's the final key that counts.

I am thinking the device and the upgrade create a unique id that ms will use with the MS user account you will without a doubt also need for Windows 10. Once that is complete, your user account with MS will hold the needed info that matches to the device.

    All guesses of course.

MS has always made it clear that this is a free 'Upgrade' to Windows 10 not a free 'Version' of Windows 10.
My guess is, that's its some legal thing. Either way its not that much of a problem, grab your new Windows 10 disk/USB/ISO and install it without a key, once finished, re-install again over the top, this time use your key. With todays PC's your only adding about 20 mins on the total install time. ;)

I also have a bunch of keys that are unused. would it be easier to just activate them all in vms and then upgrade?

If you want the keys being bound to those VMs ... YES :cool2:.
