@Akeo I was informed about the situation by a not-so-technical friend couple of hours ago, stumbled on similar issues, then checked your GitHub repos and found out the temp HTTP one. Started writing a query mail, then spotted this announcement. Hope things gonna be alright ASAP. On the other hand, have you identified the source of the attack? Are they typical scriptkiddies or part of a larger thingy? Any plan to switch to Cloudflare or similar in future?
Cloudflare didn't help much. Source of the attack is distributed, but I have a fairly good idea of who's behind these attacks since they aren't that smart. That's all I will say about it.
It is a portable version. It even says so at the top when running: "Rufus 3.4.1426 (Beta) (Portable)"
You've got to download & run it to find that out though. I'd already visited the site myself & thought it was the install version so skipped it...
Sorry, I didn't mean for my post to make you feel that way. Was just passing along info I saw. I agree that maybe Akeo could put "(Portable Version)" by the beta ones so it is clear to users.
That's actually a VERY smart way of handling things. I bet the two executables on the server are even just symlinked.
Unfortunately, whenever one depends on third-party services, there are always some sacrifices to make. That's how the cookie crumbles.
Yeah. The problem is when you try not to depend on third-party services you eventually get DDoS'd, which is the precise reason why I had to ditch the custom server and move to github. I had been doing the VPS dance for years before that, but those who think that it doesn't take that much time and/or that "You just need to slap CloudFlare on top of it and you're good" have never had to try to reliably deliver millions of downloads each month, and, in the process, attract a bunch of people who'd like nothing better but to disrupt your operations... As far as I'm concerned, it's a lose-lose situation. So I'd rather have github's dedicated network team, who I know have weathered much larger DDoS attacks, handle the usual stream of ill-wishers one attracts when one gets slightly successful...
