endbase, if you're still watching this thread, I've got another question. An update last week broke Windows 11. All efforts to recover have failed. I have no choice but to do a clean install. Earlier in this thread, you told me that I need to run the 22H2 setup from a hard drive in order to upgrade. Now I need to know if I'll be given the chance to specify where I want setup to install. If I will, will that option be offered if I run setup from a hard drive? Also, do I recall correctly that I can't simply tell setup to install it in my current Windows 11 location - because setup wants an area that's not a partition? In other words, I'll first need to delete the current Windows 11 partition?
In case endbase isn't following this thread anymore, anyone else should feel free to answer my questions.

Setup will upgrade your existing OS so where ever you installed it.

Thank you for your swift response, endbase. I can try to do an upgrade, but I believe I need, as I wrote above, a clean install. I'd appreciate answers to my questions in the case of a clean install of the 22H2 release.

No need to delete the windows 11 partition setup will notice the installation and move it to a folder Windows_Old

That was a disaster! It upgraded my Windows 10 installation!
I need to know two things.
How exactly do I roll back the upgrade?
And how can I direct the Windows 11 setup where to install?

Go to "settings" > "recovery" there should be an option to go back to the previous install.

Clean install is done from boot and usually it's best is to reformat the old c partition and all other system partitions).

ps, the thread title suggests you already should be on win 11 pro, so where did the win 10 install come in?

    Thanks for the info, Enthusiast.
I've actually changed my mind and would prefer to try upgrading my existing (though broken) Windows 11 in the hope that I can still salvage my programs and settings. So how do I do that?
I have 3 Windows installations: 8,1, 10 and 11. I used 8.1 until mid-December. I already had 10 and 11 installed and since support was ending for 8.1, I switched to 11. I'd only installed 10 so that I could upgrade to 11. As it turns out, I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had it when I couldn't get into 11.

The rollback seems to have worked. Thank you again, Enthusiast.
I hope you or someone else will tell me how to do an upgrade and specify where to install.

Upgrade will always upgrade the installation you started the Upgrade from. There is no way to upgrade another installation. It only works on OS that can still boot.
