If you read back, I've stated explicitly that our company purchased volume license instead of 100+ separate. It WAS running on my computer, which has a separate, SLIC-installed Windows 7 license. I've upgraded from that VL build to Win10 using the official updater, which turned my install into non-VL. My question targets the Win7-Win10 key conversion, if that can be done from under Win10. I was hoping that someone from here would know better. Oh well, MS support it is. One more thing. With the whole "Insiders get the free upgrade" - will it be a legit, licensed upgrade, as a "thank you" from MS, or just a trial period install?
I don't think you'll get a straight answer from them until July 29th, but if you do please post it here. I think FunkyMike answered that one best. Personally, I think you'll only get a 'Fully Activated' copy of Windows 10, if the device your using is entitled to one, whether your in the insiders program or not won't matter. If there is a 'Thank You' from MS it will be something like, the insiders will get to download it at RTM or maybe we'll get a special 'Xbox Achievement'
Actually it would make sense for MS to "pamper" the Insiders - if they get free OS (only those who have signed up in the beginning tho, and were actively using it/sending feedbacks, etc.), they will continue doing their "job" with more productivity
Get VMware player, grab a Windows 7 ISO (for what ever version your running), Install Windows 7 into a VM under your current OS, activate it with the key on the bottom of the laptop, do all windows updates till you get the Windows 10 notification. Reserve Windows 10, power down the VM till Windows 10 is released. When it's available, download it to the VM, install it and capture your Key from it, then you can get a Windows 10 RTM ISO and install on your laptop... I did this in VMware 10 with a few of my old Windows 7 and 8 licenses so I can upgrade them to Windows 10. 2 Windows 10 home and 3 Windows 10 pro, this would take care of all my machines, never mind the a few extras incase I need them later...
Sounds like a nice solution. Pity that this laptop won't run any virtual OS properly it's nearly 6 years old dammit!
thats dinosaur time for a new one.....u can pick up something real nice for around $500 check out hhgregg or tigerdirect.
I carefully read all posts but still wonder why my TP 10130 says it's activated and displays my legit windows 8.x serial... could this possibly mean that updating TP 10130 to RTM will be straitghtforward activated ? I don'see why it would not.
You have a activated copy, as RTM will be activated, if you have watermark in bottom right corner then it's not genuine, the only way to make it genuine is to have one of the qualifying OS's listed above in post @ 28 under RTM when you install, which will entitle you to a clean install of the Final (GA) genuine.
This the point most people don't like, so they are refusing to hear it. Going by the way MS sometimes 'words' things, I wonder if this includes modded BIOS's Now, that's sounds like someone else who's been burned by MS's statements in the past
If you do not have a valid os you will still get upgraded but as with all trial software you will have a certain number of days to make it legit or watch it self destruct.
NO... Windows hasn't done that since Windows XP. Unless, MS changes the way they do things for Windows 10, what will happen is: You'll have 30 days to activate, after that you will get a 'Watermark' in the bottom right of the screen telling you, your version of Windows is 'Not Genuine' and you'll get the 'Not Genuine' pop ups, from time to time. Then on Servers, Windows will shutdown/reboot after two hours of use, that starts around six months, after the trail period ends. But, I've never seen that happen on a Windows Client OS.
Are you sure you can transfer it to another PC? I believe the wording was you could have it free for the life of THAT PC. Of course we won't get into phone activation where you can have it on a 100 PCs and nobody cares. I am just speaking the normal way of activation.
