I eventually found it this morning, after Google-translating the word "firmware" to chinese. And registering for a scary chinese website, etc. My Google skills are non-trivial. -tij-
WOL again... Fiddled with 9100 with Intel LOM. There is no BIOS menu option to enable WOL. But W7 has it in card properties. Once PC is hibernated the "NIC is connected" light is lit! But sending magic pockets doesn’t wake it up, although "NIC activity" light is flashing on every packet sent on the PC MAC… Does some wire absent on MOBO, or it's blocked it some "software" way?
What's the PCI VID/DID for that LOM? Can you get an EEPROM dump? Might let us see if there's a bit that needs to be twiddled somewhere. -tij-
Code: Intel PRO/100VE 8086/27DC NIC Network Address Series WOL Boot ROM Type Version === =============== ======= === ======================= ======= 1 00123F76XXXX 10/100 YES LOM, No FLASH Present 1200 763F 3F53 1B03 FFFF 0201 4701 FFFF 0011 FFFF 48A2 01A7 1028 007F FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF 27DC FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF 00EC 4000 4111 FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF FFFF 8A79
Well, based on the display line, it looks like WOL is enabled on the LOM? Are you running the latest BIOS for the motherboard? Does the motherboard include any sections that talk about power or PME events? I notice a BIOS update for that or a similar model had an update to improve PME functionality, which is what the newer WOL card mechanisms use.. -tij-
>Well, based on the display line, it looks like WOL is enabled on the LOM? Yes >Are you running the latest BIOS for the motherboard? Yes - 4 year old >Does the motherboard include any sections that talk about power or PME events? I notice a BIOS update for that or a similar model had an update to improve PME functionality, which is what the newer WOL card mechanisms use.. No. But very similar mobo with broadcom does have them (and working WOL) Both mobo have wake on timer. So mobo has “wake up” capabilities. But what did they do to "cut off" WOL?
Well, depending on 'how similar', you might be able to record all the chipset registers on both and compare just the bits that are different. I'm not sure I have any other/better ideas, but here's a couple of questions.. Does WOL work if you use a separate NIC? Does WOL work if you use Windows XP instead of Win7? -tij-
>Well, depending on 'how similar', you might be able to record all the chipset registers on both and compare just the bits that are different. CPU-Z should be able to do it, right? >Does WOL work if you use a separate NIC? There is no WOL connector on mobo. I would it use it if it’s there >Does WOL work if you use Windows XP instead of Win7? None. In fact the NIC led is lit only if it hibernated from W7 – haven’t tried XP, I think it’ll be the same.
PCI 2.2 motherboards/cards don't need the WOL connector/cable since they have mechanisms for that built into the PCI bus. But, I think for that to work, PME still has to be enabled in the BIOS. I'm just not sure what bits that would toggle. I was just reading various forum postings where a user was having issues only with Win7, not XP on the same board. Gotta love unique problems, -tij-

Will stick Intel NIC into mobo with Broadcom LOM and check if it can be waked up. >I was just reading various forum postings where a user was having issues only with Win7, not XP on the same board. And W7/XP drives are from Intel/Broadcom, not from M$, right? >Gotta love unique problems.
Works for LOM, not for add on PCI NIC… Out of curiosity will check PCIe too! >PCI 2.2 motherboards/cards How do I check if they both 2.2?
Worked for PCIe card! And worked for both PCs! Does it mean, Intel Pro100S is not 2.2 (and cannot wake up)? That’s the only PCI NICs I have. Will try to put PCIx too into PCI and check!
Ok. PCIx can wake up both PCs. But once waked up by PCIx NIC, power button didn’t work anymore – at least I cannot turn PC off during BIOS POST. Exactly same behavior on both PCs. Double checked with PCIe - power button operation is normal (during BIOS POST). Conclusion – Intel PRO/100VE, Intel PRO/100S are not PCI 2.2? I guess this little science project is over, isn’t it? Edit: Just noticed: PCI Intel PRO/100S has 3 pin WOL connector, while neither PCIe nor PCIx have one!
Nope - not letting me - said I don't have enoght points. Said need to buy VIP membership or upload something useful...
