How can it possibly destroy your system? you either have a bad one to begin with or something else. works fine on mine

I am not surprised too. MS guys try to make architecture closed one, they are tempted with Apple profits... :/

The new build of UxStyle will support 8 and 8.1 both x86 and x64. :)

The main problem is patchers aren't update proof.

    ;)

Yeah it works great until you update one day and get the dreaded black screen on boot.

I stopped using it because of that. Has anyone found a way to change the theme/visualstyle to default by booting into the rescue wim and editing the registry?

It's not even that complicated, just boot into recovery and restore the original uxtheme, themeui and themeservice dll's

I could've sworn I tried that and it didn't work... makes sense though.

It's totally wrong because original files are still there (these files are not touched at all).

There is different problematic thing. Windows theme service "randomly" sets user's theme as system default. It does not happen always thus system default theme does not always correspond to user's selected theme. This default theme is stored in registry key HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager and if this theme loading fails, DWM will end up in infinite loop of restarts (which user can see as black screen). When it happens it is enough to boot into recovery console (btw, is there any key to load it manually?), run regedit and modify the named key to point to default Aero theme.

    Thanx for info. :)
BTW: I believed, that Recovery console is now dead in favor of WinRE (or DaRT). :)

Before choosing a theme or after? Are your system files on disk modified in any way?
