For an individual developer, is there any reason to use anything other than the free community edition? Am I missing anything that is not mentioned on the website? M$ does that - got hurt by that many years ago when trying to do something that was not possible in Windows Home edition (only Pro and above, but they never said so).

 

Not really no, except you cannot use it to do work for others that would be required to purchase another version (ect. outsourced work for a company that would have been required to buy the full version).
Feature wise, it is equal to the features of the Professional version.

Regarding getting burned before - what feature did you expect being in the Home edition, that wasn't listed as unavailable on the SKU compare listing on their website?

 

Thanks. Regarding the getting burned, it was a long time ago. Windows Vista. I was trying to create a bootable USB pen drive using DISKPART or some such tool. Struggled with it for hours. Took a break, and then decided to try on another PC, this time happened to choose one running the Ultimate version. Many other little things, especially in advanced networking. Virtualisation /HyperV - it does say Pro and above somewhere in the documentation, but not on the list one sees when deciding which version of Windows to buy.
