I use Nord VPN on Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) and have done for years. I use version 6.10.4 and the next upgrade after that one is 6.10.6. That will be the last upgrade for Win 7 as I hear they will not support further security upgrades for Win 7 after version 6.10.6. The laptop i am using it on is a Toshiba Satellite L 300 with 4 Gigabyte of RAM and an Intel Pentium T4200 Processor. Ancient I know, but works really well with the Nord VPN.

Yes, that is the trick, I also use Surfshak without a problem on an old laptop. But that is no help, as I need to use this computer

Let me put is this was: If you use a VPN server in the USA, you might as well not use a VPN at all.

I have always been puzzled... "They" have no way to see what server your computer is connected to?

I tried Proton free and couldn't get it to connect. When installing, it claims to need 2 Windows security updates (KB3033929 and KB2921916) and WebView2 which seems to be a part of MS Edge. After manually installing the 2 Win updates and choosing "skip" for WebView2, it installed, but would not connect after entering the login info. It just pops up a troubleshooting window.

    ----------

A quick update and solution. I run Proxomitron through ProxHTTPSproxy with Firefox and had shut that off, so I thought it couldn't be affecting it. But then I remembered that it also may have been set for Internet Explorer, which I never use. After turning off the Proxy setting in IE, Proton VPN will now connect. I never thought an IE setting would cause problems if not running, but it does.

Even though it connects, I've just starting using it and wow, the cloudflare prompts are a pain and some of them just get stuck in a neverending loop of check the box.

When you use a VPN, your internet traffic is routed through the VPN server, which acts as a proxy. This means that the websites and services you access see the IP address of the VPN server, not yours.

I've seen it all, from DNS leaks to IP blocking. But with the right tools and knowledge, you can stay one step ahead of the censors. So, keep on VPN-ing, and remember: the internet is a wild west - ride safe.

    My two cents.

Proton Free is more or less useless, and its job is to make you buy their outrageously priced pay version. If I remember correctly they offer only three free countries and one of them is even the US? It is similar with their mail... used to be very good, but nowadays they have pop up after pop up, trying to get you to pay for their "pro" version....

They used to be good, but you know how it is... the smell of money....

They now even give you r data away, whe asked.

Totally correct... plus, there is abasic rule: If it is free, then you are the product! Proton shows that...

I'd like to add some context to the discussion about ProtonVPN and user data.

It's worth noting that the incident described was related to Proton Mail, not ProtonVPN specifically. However, it does raise concerns about the company's willingness to cooperate with authorities and disclose user data in certain circumstances.

On a related note, I'd like to mention that some VPN protocols, such as WireGuard, have been known to leak network profiles on older operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. In my case, I had to switch from WireGuard to OpenVPN to avoid this issue.

In general, it's essential to be aware of the potential risks and limitations of any VPN service, including ProtonVPN. It's crucial to stay informed and take steps to protect your online security and anonymity.

    My two cents.

" However, it does raise concerns about the company's willingness to cooperate with authorities and disclose user data in certain circumstances."
That is very politely expressed...:) If they have a policy to deliver.... then they have a policy to deliver... Up to that day, there only speciality was their swiss and SAFE company registration, which is now void.

Proton send you pop ups about VPN PLUS. I aked what the difference between VPN and VPN PLUS, and after going forward and backward in literally SIX mails, they admitted that there is none.
They are into money... which is of course legitimate.... BUT, if a VPN does not really protect you, hat is the point?

It is a shame about wireguard... they really were fast

As I said before, you can never be 100% sure that your data will not be passed on.
The national laws where the VPN provider is based are important.
In the two cases about Proton, it was always only about data from the ProtonMail account.

And even NordVPN passes on data (Surfshark maybe also after their merger with NordVPN)
