AnarethoS: The magic word is Windows 8. As I wrote 50 pages ago, SLIC 2.2 will never be happen.
They learned the second time now. This system have a real problem.

    Pure speculation mind you

M$ WILL probably do the same as with Vista, and slip this in as a requirement for SP1. I think they will guage the success of WAT as to what level of depth they will go in saying your non-genuine. (Bit like plane safety, they will cut safety standards til planes drop out of the sky, and then say "yep thats threshold")

M$ will guage WAT and tighten the screws til they get legit owners beating at the door that they have been made non-genuine. That will take time, BUT when they are happy with the level of WAT intervention, it will be certainly in place by SP1, where it will be like Vista a manditory requirement to upgrade. I think this has been in the pipeline for some time mind you. Ever wonder why Windows 7 Ulltimate has not had the optional downloads released like Vista, you know, things like poker, tinker etc. I think they deliberately let 7 spread about, get it in the market place, NOT give out Ultimate extras yet, then in a master stroke, release WAT, forcing heaps of people to eventually buy the system.

    NOw what do

From my reading WAT may be required to be at least run once for upgrades in the future. BUT you can disable it to phone home every 90 days. As for stand-alone computers, once WAT runs once, if the computer cant call home again, it will assume its genuine for ever and a day. With a major upgrade like SP1, M$ COULD require an update run of WAT, and that could be built into the update.

So what I am doing is loading WAT, running it. (MAKE SURE YOU WAIT TIL IT CHECKS WITH THE SERVER). Once I am genuine, I am disabling any future call home features. I will re-instate it again, only if its needed for any future update. That way a check of my computer shows WAT has been run.

    How to disable and re-enable

    •Run "taskschd.msc".
•Goto Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Windows Activation Technologies.
•Double-click on ValidationTask, goto Triggers Tab and click on edit and uncheck Enabled.
•Repeat the above step for ValidationTaskDeadline

to me its the best of both worlds

    Well,

If thay must keep a way to allow pre-activation for OEM system, this will probably done via something similar to SLIC, but harder to defeat, like adding the MAC adress or CPUID of the computer in the verification.

Currently : SLIC table + CERT + KEY = Legit
New way : CPUID + MAC + SLIC table + CERT + KEY (for the version originally sold) = Legit

This would be a lot more hard to "hack". And sine not a lot of people are changing thier CPU or built-in network card...

Anyway, Windows 8 will be only in 2012, so we have time to play with 7 :D

It would be nice if you guys would not give/post them any ideas how to make it harder ;)

If one would upgrade their cpu or had to go and repair buildin modem then oem versions could report no longer genuine and angry mob of oem/preinstalled os people wanting to clear that fast, just as now people of legit os got deactivated by WAT

no way they would use the mac this would REQUIRE the mobo NEVER BE CHANGED. period. so you buy a dell and the mobo dies then what? they come out and change it and you have a new mac. besides they can be fudged with and changed with the right programs like backtrack etc...and cpuid no way. that would end in the same situation what if you buy a dell and want to upgrade the cpu? so now ms will make it so you are stuck? i think not many people wold simply move on at that point if they start limiting the hardware, never going to happen.

yup this all worked out mdl should go back to normal and let this thread die in peace or be killed for its own good lol. now that we know what this does things should be back in their normal places for stuff like bios mods requests and loaders etc...

I think this is 100% correct unless of course MS wants to lose the market and go bankrupt.

Sorry but I dont think so (either I hope that this will happen)!
They have to think about a new way to fight against piracy. I dont know if you are ever where in China! But this market with pirated copys of MS Products they are must find a way to dem up this pirated versions.

Chriss71, you are quite right and I will keep reading. However if there is any person who has similar configuration like me (matching SLIC, Cert & Key but different MB brand), I would be grateful to hear their experiences regarding of latest WAT.

sorry chriss i agreed with you all the way but i disagree about this. ms will HAVE TO keep things similar for the rollout of win8 if they expect large companies to adopt it. if they make it to complicated people will move on. now im not saying they will use slic BUT it will have to be a similar EASY method for companies and oem's alike if hey get to fancy and complicated it will bomb and never work

I totally agree with you, Daz. it is not strategically wise to put all this detailed activation info on this page, especially not at this stage, no one knows for sure what the final outcome of WAT will be.....
