M$ is just beta testing their system to charge credit cards via the store, with a negligible amount?

Please remember people.any new builds released now,has to be upgraded from older build that was activated. And then you can do a clean install.

Its the same as the free offer for win 7 and 8

A clean install can only happen after you do an upgrade first.

The activation system checks if that build number was activated on your account.

em... no. I had 10130 installed on vhd (no option to upgrade in-place), Then I made clean install of 10158 and used "well-known-new-key" and it activated successfully.

What an offer indeed! I would be suspicious of such offer if it's not from the right source. In this case it's coming from Microsoft. The fact there's no news on Microsoft blog talking about it lately would make me to say you should take it with a pinch of salt, at the moment.

If that was the case, it would be something like what financial institutions do, albeit $0.05, or $0.03 and let you know up front what is happening. It would probably come out and go back in your account all at the same time too.

Did this on an old Dell laptop. It says "Activated". Here's the receipt from MS. Hey, if it's fake, it's no big loss. What can you get for $2 these days.

Yeah, I did a clean install of 10158 in a VM and it was automatically activated. I've not even signed into my Insider MS Account, I'm using a local account, so there's no way they can "check if that build number was activated on your account." Don't know why dsbig is suggesting you need to upgrade from the older build.

Guys, don't do this. It's bogus. Disregard what I posted above. I did buy it and that's really my receipt. But the key I got is the same generic key that can be found on Google. I would rather lose a little face and admit that I got taken if it saves you guys some money. I also chatted with MS tech support and the two people I talked to didn't know anything about it. They said they'd "get back to me". Any chat sessions people showed above are BS. Here's the partial key so you can see for yourself.

Look beyond the generic key here for a moment. This Pro activation is legit but it is entirely tied to Microsoft Account and hardware hash. It's really that simple. When I decided to perform a second clean install, again not entering keys, after signing into my Microsoft Account this time it automatically activated once it verified hardware. So chances are we cannot transfer this $2 licence to other computers, but it is very much legit.

EDIT: The offer "app" appers to have been pulled from the Store now.
