    OK.
I've a clean slate due to building a new system. I have a genuine win8 key which I was running before upgrade, and was reserved in the upgrade to 10 program. I'm also an insider, but have never installed a copy of win10.

Bearing in mind that my hard drives are blank, and that the only copy I have that is installable, is 10166 on a USB key, what are my options to get 10240 on and activated without hassle?

    Any help appreciated guys.

you need to download and install 10162 using your msa and then you can upgrade to 10240 and then you can clean install 10240 and everything will be fresh.

you can probably still find 10162 links somewhere here.

or...you could just install and activate win8 and then upgrade to 10240 from there, no msa needed.
