I don't see any info about how many components are rejects on that page. My info was first hand... Ironically one vehicle which took 3 engines before one lasted was the Snap-On Van. The first time was a royal PITA because the body was all riveted together, 2nd and 3rd times it was carrage bolts.
Crap like that still happens even today. Ford's V8 engine throws a rod around 80k miles, it's out of warranty so you cough up the fix... or buy another car!
Elon has time to improve his production efficiency - as long as the big 'uns don't do his stuff... And boy, can they do that or what? Have you seen those facilities? It's a big WOW factor, you know... Seen the score: by the end of 2017 he wants to deliver 5000 cars per week (Model 3) and at 40 grand, that's $200 million per week, hence he is expanding and borrowing... Good luck with the project...
I wish -all- of the auto makers luck. If nothing else, Elon Musk seems to have motivated big auto industry to start getting rid of car emissions. Granted, as both JFKI and Joe C have pointed out, it's merely a tradeoff; Electricity from generation plants vs internal combustion. With a promised reduction of between 7 and 10% of the petrochemical industry. Let's see where it goes.
That is not a fair assessment of my point... Now if that Ford throws a rod, you have that engine replaced and three days later (or less) it throws another rod and you have it replaced and another few days later it throws yet another and you then have it replaced. It is not only the cost of the replacement, it is also the downtime, which when the work was outsourced to Mexico was on average threefold of what it should have been. During which time this customer is thinking that you are a complete imbecile and word of mouth is making it's rounds and you start losing customers because this Mexican (Juan Julio Goodwrench) who has no clue what a torque wrench is. In that scenario who eats the labor costs ?
It can also come down to MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) That means that parts are engineered and designed to last a certain amount of time, and for any manufacture that would be after the warranty expires. GM had a V6 engine that the intake/head gaskets failed, every one of these engines failed and GM knew it for years yet they still made these engines and they still failed. They do know. They just do not care, if your out of warranty they win, if your not out of warranty, then they know it is a gamble they are willing to take https://www.google.com/search?newwi....1.64.psy-ab..0.4.214...35i39k1.0.dKrHc0rZLp8
LOL.. But less than 1,000 miles ? And yes I do realize your point. Chrysler had a problem with their V-6's in their caravans in which the valve guides would literally fall out of the heads, which they never to my knowledge fixed.
Western Digital stopped using MTBF on their platter drives and now call it CDL (Component Design Life) Which means that these things like everything else manufacture'd today, is designed to fail after a certain amount of hours https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=665 Makes me wonder what kind of term they're going to use for EV's?
The Chinese are bringing prices down. I was impressed to see a small 4-seater EV around $3,500 FOB. For comparison, a Mini Cooper starts at $22,000. http://tangland.en.made-in-china.co...ll-4-Passenger-Person-Wheel-Electric-Car.html
