Toyota Develops Fuel Cell System for Maritime Applications

February 3, 2020―Former racing catamaran turned ship of the future, Energy Observer has made waves as it has been navigating its six-year odyssey around the world as the first energy-autonomous hydrogen vessel. Today, Toyota, official partner of Energy Observer and an avid supporter of their project from the start, announces that it has developed a fuel cell system for maritime applications, with its first delivery destined for Energy Observer.

Embarking in June 2017 from Saint- Malo Port in France, Energy Observer is an electrically propelled vessel of the future that is operated using a mix of renewable energies and an on-board system that produces carbon-free hydrogen from seawater. The operators of the vessel are on a mission to go and meet people in 50 countries and 101 ports during their voyage who are designing the future, with an aim to prove that a cleaner world is not only possible, but that the innovations can open some doors to a new economic expansion. Their activities also demonstrate and share potential solutions to champion an ecological and energy transition, as well as support tomorrow's energy networks as they encourage providers to make the networks more efficient and applicable on a large scale.

Previously, Toyota's fuel cell system, which was first introduced in the Toyota Mirai, the world's first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, proved its value as a propulsion system for automobiles. However, the company has more recently been exploring the use of its fuel cell system in other applications such as buses and trucks.

Toyota, a company aiming to develop a hydrogen society based on its challenge to "Establish a future society in Harmony with Nature" as stated in its Environmental Challenge 2050, was able to align with Energy Observer.'s mission and activities. From that common ground, the two have worked closely together on how a hydrogen fuel cell system could be adapted to martime applications, which eventually led to the introduction of Toyota's maritime fuel cell technology and system.

The maritime-specific fuel cell system was developed by Toyota Technical Center Europe in a mere seven months. It required a re-design of the system, followed by the build and installation of the compact fuel cell module. This was accomplished using components first introduced in the Toyota Mirai which were fitted into a more compact module suitable for marine applications. The project successfully demonstrates the adaptability of the Toyota fuel cell technology to a variety of applications, including those outside of land-based vehicles.

The Toyota Fuel Cell System has proven its benefits already for many years in the Mirai, but more recently also in other applications such as buses and trucks. Using it for maritime transportation is again another step closer to the development of the hydrogen society. Toyota believes that hydrogen is the catalyst for energy decarbonisation and the technology acceptance can accelerate with the Toyota Fuel Cell System modular solution, which can be considered for a multitude of applications.

To ensure compatibility, the Toyota fuel cell module was tested with Energy Observer while the boat was at dock at the end of last year. Currently, the system is undergoing its final full power testing is at sea prior to the Energy Observer officially setting sail from Saint- Malo Port, scheduled in Feburary, as they embark for their 2020 Tour. Energy Observer is set to benefit from the Toyota maritime fuel cell system capable of delivering more power, efficiency, and reliability as its tour route includes crossing both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Eliminating Cobalt Metal in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Energy storage startup SPARKZ Inc has exclusively licensed five battery technologies from the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory designed to eliminate cobalt metal in lithium-ion batteries. The advancement is aimed at accelerating the production of electric vehicles and energy storage solutions for the power grid.

The licensed technologies include cathode materials, a novel electrolyte formula and a scaling process that will together enable industrial scale production of more sustainable, fast-charging cobalt-free batteries. Cobalt is a rare, costly and difficult-to-access metal that increases the performance but reduces the safety of lithium-ion batteries found in consumer electronics, such as mobile devices, and in electric vehicles, or EVs. The metal is specifically used in a battery's cathode, the positively charged end that determines much of a battery's performance. However, because cobalt is costly and mined overseas, finding alternative materials has become a top priority.

Global battery demand is expected to increase to around 14 times 2018 levels of 184 gigawatt hours, or GWh, to more than 2,600 GWh in 2030, according to a report by the World Economic Forum's Global Battery Alliance. Of that growth, the large majority is projected to take place in the mobility sector, a main focus of the licensed technologies.

"Oak Ridge National Laboratory is pleased to license this suite of advanced battery technologies to support efficient, affordable energy storage for electric vehicles," said Moe Khaleel, associate laboratory director of ORNL's Energy and Environmental Sciences Directorate. "Our scientists push the boundaries of what's possible with materials science and process engineering. By working with industry partners such as SPARKZ Inc. we can help accelerate the transition of these technologies to the marketplace for the greatest societal impact."

SPARKZ Inc is evaluating a location for an R&D and prototyping facility in the U.S. to scale these technologies to meet the demands of customers in the mobility and grid sectors. "We have chosen Oak Ridge National Laboratory to be our partner because ORNL provides all those functionalities which are essential to get a product rapidly to market; namely, access to the world's best battery technologists, or human capital; access to the best technology, or intellectual capital; and access to the best infrastructure," SPARKZ Inc. CEO Sanjiv Malhotra said.

lithium batteries: This high-density lithium battery design uses novel cathode and anode compositions to overcome energy density limitations of existing technologies for more efficient rechargeable batteries.

Cobalt-free layered oxide cathodes: This low-cost, cobalt-free cathode material was created for the development of improved lithium-ion batteries.

Nonaqueous electrolyte with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide salt for fast charging/discharging of Li-ion batteries: Electrolytes are the liquid medium by which cathodes and anodes "talk" to each other in batteries by exchanging electrons. This new electrolyte formulation allows faster charging for lithium-ion batteries and can perform at a 23% higher capacity during a 12-minute charge than other formulas.

Early transition metal stabilized high capacity oxidatively stable cathodes of lithium-ion batteries: This innovation improves on lithium-ion cathodes by replacing early transition metals, namely cobalt, at relevant sites in cathodes, and by varying the lithium composition.

Battery materials scale up and processes: This manufacturing innovation enables industrial-scale production of battery materials through a series of chemical processes.

"The hallmark of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's technologies is developing low-cost, cobalt-free cathode materials without compromising on energy density," said Jagjit Nanda, a principal investigator on several of the licensed technologies, who works in ORNL's Chemical Sciences Division. Energy density, or the amount of charge that a given quantity of a material holds, is especially important for EVs. Fast-charging, energy dense batteries developed by ORNL and scaled by SPARKZ could allow electric charging stations to take over as the "gas stations of the future."

"I look at this as a very strategic partnership," Belharouak said. "It will establish ORNL as the 'engine' around energy storage research in the Southeast region."

In 2019, DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Vehicle Technologies Office selected the ORNL-SPARKZ partnership for the DOE Lab Investment Incubator Activity, which focuses on maturing lab-scale technologies for commercialization.

The partnership was also selected in 2019 for a $750,000 DOE Technology Commercialization Fund project, "Enabling Cobalt-Free Battery Solution for Behind-the-Meter Storage."

Wisk, New Zealand Government partner on world's first self-flying taxi trial

Trials of a pilotless, electric air taxi could soon begin near Christchurch, with an American startup gaining backing from the Crown.

The Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Wisk to support "a world-first passenger transport trial of the company's all-electric, self-flying air taxi "Cora" in Canterbury," Research, Science and Innovation Minister Megan Woods said.

Wisk is a joint venture between Boeing and Kitty Hawk - the latter bankrolled by Google co-founder and multi-billionaire Larry Page.

The startup - which has its corporate headquarters in Mountain View, California - first set up an outpost in Canterbury in 2017, attracted by the relatively empty skies, and the Civil Aviation Authority's reputation for being relatively open to drones and other un-manned aerial vehicles.

Air New Zealand joined the party in 2018, signing a collaboration deal with Wisk (then trading as Zepher Airworks).

Around the same time, Boeing was brought on as Wisk's first major outside investor - in a deal that gave Wisk manufacturing ability, plus the wherewithal to overcome a number of reported technical snags.

There have already been hundreds of hours of test flights, but the company is still waiting on CAA certification for trials involving passengers.

The company is hoping for commercial launch within four years.

The Cora could, for example, fly passengers from Auckland Airport to the city's CBD, thanks to its vertical takeoff and landing ability, Wisk's then-CEO Fred Reid told the Herald as the Air NZ hookup was announced.

Wisk also sees potential for short-hop tourist flights.
