Ok, I see your point. The UI is more advanced now. Personally it does not bother me though lol. I have also noticed from my own experience that the latest build of KIS 2010 uses less Ram then Norton 2010 and symantec brags about nis 2010 being light on resources. :)

Agree with you, KIS is far better than other "all in one". Second place, I think, Comodo Personal Firewall.
I used several security programs. Since the late norton anti-virus 3.0. I was almost fanboy of KIS for a few years. But this 2010 version disappointed me. They complicate everything and put other frills.

In fact, Kaspersky helped me realize that I don't need these packages. To keep the system safe (as far as possible) is relatively simple: common sense, do not run anything that you are not sure and use sandbox (or virtualization) for things that can be dangerous, a firewall that does just the in- out-bound rules and a good antivirus. That's it.

About that UI: for me it is not advanced but rather confusing. Compare with the previous version, especially the part where you configure the firewall rules.

Yea I have to agree with you there on the firewall rules. I really do not like how they did that either compared to the 2009 version but once you figure out the UI it becomes rather simple. At least for me anyway. I have to also agree with you there on the common sence factor but one thing that still troubles me is both the drive-by-downloads that give you viruses without you knowing, the java exploits that it appears only Kaspersky detects, and all those annoying fake antivirus sites that reroute you from other sites. Since I installed KIS 2010 I do not get any of those annoying sites come up anymore!

firefox with adblock plus and noscript are a great way to secure your machine when you open webpages.
then you can use KIS 2010 that is a very good all in one and very simple to use.
I prefere KAV 2010 and comodo firewall with defense+ to secure my windows OS.

that works too lol. I just like KIS 2010 cause I do not get those annoying re-routes to sites that look like a antivirus scanner that detects a s**t load of things then asks you to protect yourself with their software.(SCAM SCAM SCAM). It is just annoying as hell to get those lol. Comodo is good too but it does not block all those fake sites.

I have been Using Avast Home since 4.x, in nearly 10 different computers with various configurations.
there is none that can compare with it.
its powerfull enough that I have rarely had any viruses. and believe you me, I visit all sorts of dangerous websites and download all sorts of stuff from the internet(including pron, hacked softwares, keygens, dialers etc.) from some of the most unreliable places. and I rely on the windows firewall only. but i have never had any trouble.
I also maintain some 10 -15 computers in my neighbourhood. some are old pentiums,/ athlons, some are even celrons with very limited Ram. but all of them are used by amateurs ( most probably like your Gran, no offence intended)
all of them run Avast home 4.x. I will probably upgrade it next time I work on them.

So go for it and forget your troubles.

It is very difficult to have the best internet security, The first step would be having a good firewall software so that unnecessary traffic will be discarded.Second can be having a good anti virus software like Microsoft Security Essentials which must be a licensed version. It works very good. The pc or laptop can also be hacked so it is very necessary to protect it.A good software of malware and spamware must be updated regularly.

I have a paid KIS licence which expires in Oct 2010, but still am using MSE since early 2010. I find MSE very light on resources, and though KIS may be better (as vouched by most), MSE is good enough alongwith malware. One good thing about MSE: one can download the definition updates offline. Thus, at reinstall, one does not have to redownload the entire definition update (which is currently >50MB). I download the definition update from my office PC once a week and delete the old back up. Is this thing there in KIS. I could not find the source.

Eset NOD32 4.2 Antivirus. COMODO or PC Tools Firewall Plus. (Both are good).

On other hand I use KIS, the latest version, 0.736, I don't use PURE.

I use MSE + Comodo Firewall (both free), but if you want, you can test the new Norton Internet Security 2011 Beta :) it's available on their official website

Avira has been one of the best for years now (going by everything I have seen). It gets beat by GData, if you count that as a single product.

Yep, +1 for Avira, I use Avira Premium with Trial resetter, MBAM pro, Comodo firewalll with Defense+ and sandboxie. Don't like the sandbox in Comodo. Pretty secure here IMO. :)

Windows Vista in the Security Controls had the ability to set up White / Black list, but that was removed in Windows 7, Is there a free equivalent for that in 7 ?
