I loved XP when it was out, 7 when it was out. Now I am on 10, and love it too!

Exactly. I have other Computers with Win 7 and 10, but for me there wasnt any worthwhile improvement. Everything got a fancy new UI, and applications became heavier and heavier. Under the hood there are no real improvements. Today i need at least twice the ressources to do the same task that i did 10 years before. Maybe thats the reason why you still get Windows 10 for free, because nobody really want to use it. Its a resource hog, even on modern computers. It uses your ressources inefficiently.
If XP ever becomes really unusable then i will probably run it offline inside a VM in Linux, together with the clean official software that i use for many years. In fact some of my clients use web applications like Browsers only inside Linux-VMs. The VM-Host is still Windows XP :) These people work for industry where they always had higher security standards than a normal Home-User. I dont think XP will become obsolete anytime soon as it still serves its purpose. Often times even better than modern Software does.

Btw. OP asked for Security measures. Not for our opinion if XP is obsolete or not ;) Everyone has to decide for himself about this. Lets get back to topic pls

Also remember to enable proactive security profile. It enables hips and others. It gives annyoing prompts but once allowed/disallowed all softwares you have it works well.

The obsolete or not part is a pretty important question as this progression limits mitigation over time. Asking if it is already too late is important.

Asking directly, is there a safe way to use an XP system for both general purpose surfing and online banking and/or shopping in 2020, my answer is no.

XP at its core is insanely easy to code for due to the nearly unlimited ways you can make stuff run automatically and hook into it at a very low level.

Truly making XP secure would involve breaking a lot of stuff that makes it cool thus breaking its old school compatibility. You can't win both sides of the equation.

I have a bare metal XP retro gaming system and my approach is to assume that it is both compromised and open to new compromises at all times therefore the things it is allowed to do online are very limited. 99% of the time networking is disabled.

IMO this isn't really a question of "Is XP obsolete?" but more of a question of "Is the concept of securing XP obsolete?". IMO, it is?

LOL..."Dude???" Not many I know call themselves Janie D. And, yes - they cost a pretty penny and the Ryzen 7 is STILL sitting in it's box...now 2 years later and counting.

Janie D., my suggestion is to just NOT LISTEN to the fear-porn & the koolaid drinkers.

M$ has never actually 'supported' anything or anyone EXCEPT for M$ itself, and though I'm typing this on my main, Linux box, my XP box sits right beside me here & can be fired up anytime I like, without a scrap of fear or concern.

The main reason I seldom use it anymore is NOT due to any security or concern that it was declared obsolete by uncle beezlebub & co. - it is WAY simpler than that:
90% of what I mainly used that OS for works 100% fine as windoze apps running under WINE.
I even have a couple of my portable browsers copied directly from the XP box that I still use as-is, daily, under Linux.
The main reason that box stays as-is for now is that I can easily swap out its drive in a minute for projects that I'm involved in, and mainly when it is running XP I use that for My Phone Explorer and a specific OpenVPN connection - neither of which have I yet forced to work 100% under Linux.

    SO:
Unless you are a daily user of web stupidities like porn sites, bad cybercrime oriented sites, and various phishing scams - the VERY BEST way to keep yourself & your PC safe on the internuts is to have an active & watchful mind - it is the very best security tool ever - far better than any/all s/w tools.

Aside of all that - why not just nuke the malware called '10' off of that new box BEFORE even booting it for the sake of ease - and install a nice, free WELL SUPPORTED Linux distro instead ??

    Very Well Said !!:
As I've mentioned before, a great pleasure for me is to unbox a brand new NB PC with that '10' trash on it, fire it up ONLY to the CMOS settings to shut off the UEFI & (IN)secure boot trash, then boot into GParted & wipe that drive clean of the GPT rubbish, then set it to MBR - and put a REAL, user controlled OS onto it.
Brings a smile to my face every time !!

Yes, I know lots of what I said here will of course inflame the koolaid drinkers & M$ fanboys to whom I only reply thusly in advance:
When you can exceed the number of successes that I've had with PCs, networks, charitable works and clients, then do please teach me how I could have done better during the past 20+ years and continue to do - but kindly spare me your prophesies of doom that our XP boxes here are 'dangerous' and all other such blather that has ZERO basis in reality.
    Thanks.

LOL...It looks like the singular "someone" may be minimizing things a bit, but thank you for the recommendation!

"Using" is also a bit of a contentious word when talking about XP. I would imagine that most XP "users" don't use it was their primary system to do absolutely everything.

I have an XP system but I only really use it for tasks that either require XP or are just easier to do in XP as well as retro gaming. Its not online either. USB 3 and a fast flash drive makes moving files easy enough.

In my case, I can say for sure: All my systems, old or new, have the latest OS that works for them. Means requirements are met, drivers are available, and you do not need to have getting a coffee after every click.
For general purpose, there's a special Linux (AntiX) supporting old hardware.

Disclaimer: Does not apply to Windows 8 and above.

I no longer use XP very much, but while I still did I found that IDM was too limiting for me.

Instead I found how to get the JAR file for JDownloader (rather than the EXE installer which gave my AV fits !!), and still use that same thing under Linux.

It does WAY more than IDM ever did & with less hassles - and all I use is the free version.

That is all I can recommend - bearing in mind that the PC needs to have at least a minimal version of Java.
(Under XP I was still using Java 6 & it worked fine...YMMV, of course.)

They are both DL managers, and of course a comparison is possible:
Most of the comment above is confusing besides that part ??

IMO, JDL, even in its free form has loads more abilities than IDM.
It grabs links flawlessly, and even offers variations of media sizes & types when it grabs YT links - which is phenomenal.
JDL also updates itself and best of all, for my needs=>
Prior to using JDL any DL from stinky mega bigger than ~10MB would quit & fail (IDM didn't help with this), but JDL gets these things 100% with zero trouble.

And from what you (Msalman) said before, your need is for a DL manager that works under XP - hence my 1st answer as I reported what worked 100% for me - the JAR version of JDL, that's all.
