    Actually no, just look at the recently documented security hole in IE. The issue is in an OS component. No antivirus software will blacklist an OS component. Currently you can say people shouldn't use IE and that's fine. What about the next issue? What if explorer.exe or a networking component will be the next security risk? Should we tell people not use the shell or the internet? Common sense doesn't always work. Also thinking that not visiting malicious sites is good precaution. What if a DNS server gets infected and simply redirects you when you try to reach a well-known and safe site? It's an ancient an well-known risk and you can't do anything about it.

    @EFA: Server 2003 will also reach its EOL within a year.

    On May 13th, security updates for Windows POSReady 2009 / Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8 were released along with updates for other operating systems. Those updates were "fixed" and started circulating within hours. They work fine with XP / Internet Explorer. More than one source have posted them, so I'm guessing if you want to continue to use XP and still get updates, you're probably good until at least 2019 and maybe beyond that. I can say, absolutely, that the "fixed" updates can be installed and show up under "Add & Remove Programs".

    Your points are certainly valid, and are a possible scenarios, although somewhat unlikely. Fortunately, as we all know critical updates for "other" XP OS are and will still be released by MS for years and already have and will find it's way to XP users, so we are good. :smile3:

    =>#3. In a dual-boot
    with Xp installed first ;
    using GParted < // en wikipedia org / wiki / GParted >to shrink Wind partition + make linux (EXT4) & SWAP & data (NTFS)
    then a RHEL clone (SL) <// en wikipedia org / wiki / Scientific_Linux > with the GRandUnifiedBootloader legacy (GRUB) installed to the linux partition.
    .
    Works perfect -- Using S.L. to get on the internet.
    The graphical installation 'found' the existing Win & put it on the GRUB menu.
    Using the 3g-ntfs 'driver' package , linux can access the NTFS data partiton.
    Everything is free.
    ...
    Then why are you in this topic?

    I am using Scientific Linux 6.5 -- a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) clone <// www scientificlinux org > from FermiLab /CERN
    on a DELL Precision Workstation 470 : 2 G ram , 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon , 160 G HDD
    in a Graphical User Interface (GUI) desktop {GNOME 2}
    the system is rock - solid stable.
    The best part is that almost every configuration is in an ASCII plain-text file.

    Will look into that for running the very few programs that don't have equivalents in linux.

    Did I mention that linux & all of the software application programs are free?
