Windows Defender, aka MSE seems to do the job well enough, and for everything else there is Hitman Pro.

Using Avast Premier for quite some time...Its Better than Kaspersky(Makes system slow), Bit-defender(bogus interface of Windows 8 edition), G-DATA(God, why they have made it...Bad Interface, slowing system and manual update???)

I've recently formatted my PC and before doing so, i've tested the above three Anti-viruses apart from Avast 8 Premier...

Trust me, it's far better..Interface is neat and even their free version is also good(installed it in my brother's PC)..

Opinions could be different from People to People...But i just want to say that Don't just trust Windows Defender...install any 3rd-party Anti-virus either Free or Paid....I have seen friend's PC getting infected to malwares/ viruses who blindly trusts Windows Defender!!!!

Ok, lets be honest here, I have seen PC's with all the major Antiviruses in the market, infected. From Avast to Panda. There is no antivirus good enough for stupid users. Windows Defender is perfectly fine, is free and is already installed on ur system (This is a Windows 8 section) and, just like any other antivirus, it does requiere a couple of neurones from the user (and stop doing brainless things like deactivate smart screen and user account control).

please explain and convince me, I am open for a discussion. Maybe I am wrong, maybe I have it all in my head that I should *pay
8 for an AV and not rely on the cheap alternatives.

The reason I hate AVG for example is its constant nagging to upgrade and stuff, same with AVira. Avast is better in that department I love how lisht and unintrusive MSE is but I wish I could trust it.

    c0nvince meh bro

PS: I use Firefox, Adblock Plus, MVPS hosts file, DoNotTrackMeh add on, Google OptOut and I don't go to f!shy websites

I'm too tired of this argument, really. I used to install all kind of tools (adblock, spybot, zonealarm, FreeRam etc, etc,) on Windows XP times, when I had Internet Virus 6 (IE6). I used to scan my pc at least 2 times every week (with Nod32, Karspersky and any new AV that I found on the geeky websites) I had this.. very good defragmenter program... can't remember its name. We are just not there anymore. The only way u can see this is if u get ur Windows 8 clean out of the box, install all the updates, and just give it a try ... 15 days, take it as a dare. I swear, we are not in year 2k anymore.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.2100.2093. I was happy enough with Windows Defender until a couple of days ago, when my routine check threw up a startup item called insidminer.exe. I was reluctant to install SEP as it's a bit of a hog even on my system (i7 990x, 32GB RAM, OCZ SSD), but it's on now. I still recommend MSE and it's variants to my clients for their personal systems.

Heh, the only thing you're missing is MBAM Pro.

Seriously, for you, MSE/SCEP2012 would be fine.

I think the answer to this thread would depend on which virus you were going to install first.

I am using Avast and Immunet Plus together. This powerful combo is enough to protect my PC from all kinds of malware.

F-Secure Internet Security 2013, works pretty well but the annoying thing is that it nags several times per day about that the software will expire in XX days.

MBAM on demand, HitmanPro on demand, VirusTotal uploader.

I also installed K9 Web Protection for anti phishing and to block ads and some disgusting content.

So what does an anti -virus actually do? it seems like a placebo to me,just because it's installed you feel protected..?
