I use Nod Smart security because it doesn't quarantine my autoit source code like other AVs do.

average Joe runs no servers and even is not aware of such things you mention.
Quite a bit brain.exe and the AV which comes with W8 is sufficient. It does not slow down your system as most/all other 3rd party soft does and you are save.
Reactive software cannot be totally safe because it needs to wait for signature updates prior to be able to see the enemy.
It was said so many times but it seams that no-one listens to .... wasted words :smoking:

As I wrote in Post #4: NONE!

A good Firewall does a better job as an AntiVirus Apps if is configured correctly. Special if you have more than 1 computer running in your private (or whatsoever) Network, it also free's up quite a bit of resources for and on any computer (if you use an config as I did (Post #4)) because all AV's and also Firewall's on that Workstations could be fully disabled. Beside of the freed up Resources, it also ease the work quite a bit.

Totally agree pisthai, if you own a good firewall and know how to set it, you don't need AV at all, just Malwarebyte's On-Demand scanner or a other one for just be sure nothing bad is running without your permission.

Big Advantage : without AV ressource are terrific;)

Symantec Endpoint is super-fast on my system, though I think Norton is faster. Symantec has invested a ton over the last few years on performance and it shows. Their products are blazing fast, NOTHING like the old Norton.

Windows Defender is the worst product when it comes to protection. That is proven in tests. Why would you take that risk ? $10 after rebate for the year is a good investment as far as I am concerned in any paid product. I would stay away from the free products since those guys owe you nothing, since you aren't paying them. So they are not incented to go above and beyond.

It's possibly right, though. I recall an HP Server that we had in the 90s when I was @ Bombardier. It was a 486 and defo had at least 512MB RAM, so he could have an old server board. Might have been a 486DX4-133. Best part of 2 decades ago, though, so I can't be sure!

I wouldn't bet on that, chief. I've seen 486 server boards with 16 RAM slots.

...none, just benchmark your Windows with AV and then again without it.
BTW: Use MS Defender, what came with W8, if you really feel, that you have to use some AV.
