And your reasoning is? Why does AVG allow me to download the EICAR tests, when Avast blocks them before they even get to the filesystem?
And reason is that it all depends weather u choose an adon for browser for browsing security or not it has nothing todo with security issue. And secondly its user friendly and not that much complicated mate
I'm lost here! Why installing an antivirus on Win 8? You don't need one with windows defender. Defender is an antivirus an a antispyware. I'm running win 8 since almost the beginning without anything then Defender and i surf a lot everywhere (chinese site, torrent underground site etc) without any problem. You're losing your time and your money. Lievre
I tested the newest versions of both AVG and Avast and no browser addons were installed in Firefox by either one. For AVG I installed all options, including the Link Scanner: With Avast, File Shield, Web Shield only: The results were: AVG allowed downloading all the eicar test cases to the download folder Avast blocked all the non-SSL tests. The SSL encrypted ones still reached the filesystem. And the most interesting was that Windows Defender blocked all of them, including the https ones.
Guys this is a thread necro... Anyway, here are my "Essentials" for Windows systems: - UAC **must** be enabled and set on HIGHEST LEVEL - MSE / Win8.x Defender, scheduled with weekly full scan - Immunization with Spybot: Search & Destroy 2.x - Immunization with Spywareblaster - Secunia PSI - Adblock Plus on all browsers used (with Malware protection enabled) - ClamWin set to Report-only with a Daily Scan of the boot folder and memory, and a weekly full scan - Either Google Chrome or Firefox And for power users: - Enable Click-To-Play in Chrome - Use FlashBlock in Firefox - VTHash with a free Virustotal.com account - Sandboxie for those untrustworthy websites - Switch DNS servers to OpenDNS and use anti-malware/spyware blocking lists - Linux in a Virtual Machine And here's additional protection I am currently testing: - Disable Java Web in Java Control Panel (disables its use on browsers) - No 32-bit Java on 64-bit Windows (since I use 64-bit browsers except for occasional Chrome) - MCShield for automatically scanning removable drives - "TinyWall" Windows Firewall management service that helps you manage it blocking outbound too - Locking down IE as much as possible without just uninstalling it - "Fire IE" extension for Firefox to use IE engine inside of Firefox - etc.
