Today I tested on another usb port and it worked, go figure! I`m now on a live session of ubuntu! The media player that came with ubuntu didn`t work as it worked on Mint. I had to download another software called Clementine to hear music. I really hope they make Kanotix and other distros like the thesis Socrate posted. I know it is impossible to be secure 100% of the time and that there is no 100% secure system but if we manage to make it harder for them to spy on us it`ll be better for us in the end. PS: I`ll try later with these two softwares you guys posted.
If your looking to not being spied on, then Ubuntu is not the best option. Also Ubuntu has recently been hacked. I personally would stay away from anything Ubuntu right now. ie; Linux Mint, elementary, Zorin, all the *buntu's, deepin, etc....
I agree, that's why I wouldn't recommend using security onion as it's based on ubuntu 12 ed snowden recommended kali tails linux and I guess he absolutely knows what he's talking about
PCLinuxOS is a nice distro that is really easy to use, There are more but I know know them right off hand. I will update later. Can you show me where he recommends Kali? I was under the impression that he only used Tails.
I'd like to game in linux, if possible (diablo 3: ros). Are opensuse, kanotix and pclinuxos able to run games or are they meant for security? If i disable those spying stuff off of mint as the original poster posted will it still be insecure? Thank you for the patience of answering all these questions. I have many doubts.
@Skaendo: thanks. I found another one: Proteus I see this is the standard method of gathering "followers": first slax, slackel, proteus and when the n00b is ready... ZA MOTHERSHIP, Slackware, takes them away. Too...many...distros...to many USB sticks...ZA HORROR...ZA HORROR Later edit: I'll go for Slackel. Is updated more often and has newer packages.
Ok, after reading this thread, and my dislike of windows 10 spying because it looks like the only way to use windows 10 is to not be online at all with it, I decided to take the plunge and install Linux mint on my spare notebook. Note: I have never used Linux ever. I been windows support for over 20 years. Nothing tricky on how to install it, tried usb install and disc with the Linux mint 17.2 iso and both worked. Using Toshiba Satellite M105 Notebook. Results after one day playing with it, only a few things (very few) I had to adjust to. Like actually typing a user name to login along with password. But that can be changed right? Overall, so far I really have no problems switching from windows to Linux. I can see this in a business environment with minimum issues. Bottom line, Windows 10 made me switch to Linux.
All of this worrying about spying. Best to embrace it and thank Microsoft, Facebook, Google for the services they provide paid for by your personal data. As long as the 90% happly dump there personal lives on the internet to be sold to corporates, you will gradually be sucked into HAVING TO do the same. Need a job, a better job - why arn't you on linkedin, facebook? etc...
