ive tried a search on here but oem wont search and inverted commas finds no results my sons hp laptop has legit and licensed activated win 8.1 oem 64 bit and i wondered if there is a way to update it to win 10? thanks
1. The laptop probably came with Win 8.1 Home x64, isn't it ? If it came with Win 8 Home, it can be upgraded to Win 10 Home for free. If it came with Win 8 Pro, it can be upgraded to win 10 pro, etc. for free. 2. You can either make an in-place upgrade ( keeping your apps & files or just files ) or backup your files & make a direct clean installation of win 10 ( losing your installed apps & files) & restoring files from the backup afterwards. What do you want ? Thanks. ...
it came with loads of bloatware so id love to wipe it and put the minimum back on google tells me core is home so id like a win 10 home 64 bit clean installation will it cost me or can it be done free?
Yes, you are having HOME. You can directly do win 10 home 64 clean installation & Its free. But. ... you are probably having a big recovery partition on your disk. It would be better to make a USB 3 ( 32 GB ) Recovery Drive before hand. What you say ? Thanks. ...
plus msdm ive had to google. ive never come across that term before so a quick explanation would be fine. ive got the win 8 product key
Create a bootable USB (you can use Rufus, https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...-with-secure-boot-install-wim-over-4gb.79268/ or just use the MCT to create the USB drive. During setup from boot you get the partition options, here you can delete all existing partitions and repartition, i would recommend a 300GB OS partition, at the least. Installing the programs on another partition on the same physical drive is a bit useless to me, then you just could use the whole drive for the OS + programs. MSDM = the oem bios key part in the bios, it's the activation for 8.x/10 windows on oem systems with pre-installed OS.
i installed win 10 on my daughters pc and on my second pc and cant remember what versions i have this download still on my pc Win10_1909_English_x64 disc image file 5,294394 KB is there a way to check this is what i want ? cannot see a ref to 1429 ID you posted while i was typing i think i used rufus before edit still dont know how to use msdm so i dont need a partition for the os if i only have one drive. ok i get that. ta how do i get win 10 activated and legal? cheers
Here is the info on that ISO: https://forums.mydigitallife.net/th...pc-19h1-2-release.79259/page-345#post-1559501 The MSDM is the activation key embedded in the BIOS, you don't have to do anything other then just boot from the bootable USB and it all will be done automatically. It will select the SKU to install, Home in this case, if the 8.1 install was Core. And it will activate the Home install as soon as you connect the device to the internet. You still need to delete all existing partitions and re-partition, during setup, if you want one big OS partition, just select "next" after deleting all existing partitions, windows will create the needed partitions by itself.
thats absolutely brilliant guys, thanks loads. im on with it later today. hopefully i will report back on here with my success. cheers
selected gpt on rufus but wouldnt boot from usbdrive so had to disable secure boot in bios. i dont like the way hp is still showing its logo on startup before going into bios. hope that goes away. its installing windows as we speak, fingers crossed forgot to remove usb so was trying to set up again doh then just took ages "getting ready" and "wait a moment"
1. If you use rufus with Win 10 1909 ISO, You will have to disable secure boot to boot into the pen drive. Its normal. ( Once the installation is over & stabilized, You can again enable that ) 2. That hp branding will be always there ( if I am right ) but surely you will see that only during the boot. All other hp bloatware & material will not be there in the newly installed OS. 3. Did you set the USB boot preference over the internal disk ? At every restart, proceeding further in the installation, it will be booted from the pen drive if it is connected. So, it will start from the scratch. The ideal boot order is to keep internal disk boot priority on the top & whenever you want to boot from the pen drive or CD /DVD, launch the one time boot menu to boot into it. 4. Yes it takes a lot of time. Be patient. Hope you are out of the USB boot loop! Thanks. ...
all set up and fully updated thanks. secure boot re enabled and the usb drive relegated back down in the boot priority seems quite slow to restart, disabled one drive and a few other things such as indexing or windows search and that seems to have speeded it up, but its a 2014 lap top. but thanks everyone right how much do i owe you?
As for what you said "seems quite slow to restart", what is the waiting time you set to waiting time before closing programs and services? By default it is 15 seconds, I would recommend no more than 5 seconds. 5 seconds is enough long waiting time before each app closing. You said "but it's a 2014 laptop" - it doesnt mean absolutely nothing, better say what is included into this laptop, ie what processor, what graphics, what RAM and how much, how much is enabled page file, what hard drive is in use, etc. There are many things that determine how your computer works, that determine how fast it is or how fast it can be at all, but so far you haven't said anything about these things, but you say, it's slow.
