I am happy to report that I went back and did a new fresh install again. By the way I was installing Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. After it completed I then rebooted and after the reboot I look in System Properties and yes I see the "loaded" model and it says "Activated". And yes I have the text file on my desktop and everything is working perfectly now.

I think since I was installing from a USB drive, when the system first rebooted normally I needed to leave the USB stick in the drive until the installation was 100% completed. Then the additional reboot after everything was done made all the difference.

Thanks to all for their helpful comments. I can confirm that this worked perfectly on my old Dell Dimension 2400 desktop. And it actually runs better than XP!

    Thanks,

sounds logical, and thanks for re-testing ... glad it worked out for ya ;)

btw...I tested the alternative to try method and it worked ok ... the main difference with the "alternative to try" is that it runs from the hard-drive, rather than optical/usb drive.

I might replace Download Link2 with this, so that if an installation DVD or USB is removed a little early, runonce can still run, and everything needed is in one folder ($oem$)

Doesnt really seem to activate after install or reboot after install.

Runonce in root of iso and oem in sources folder ofcourse.

No problem:), its just a temporary place to host other ppl's files until theyre reuploaded again by the creator, then im mostlikely to remove it or just make MDL private again.

    Thanks for the thanks :p

You can delete and get the defaults. However you can add more different versions if you edit it. In combination with a x86/x64 DVD you can do more with it.

How can you add more different versions setup reads install.wim and shows what versions are in it , just because you edit the ei.cfg don't mean they are there. you didn't see more than one version in the Technet EI.cfg did you.

    Well clarify :p
Deleting the ei.cfg file gives you more editions to install but does not att more options to the install.wim.
If its only one edition in the install.wim then it doesnt matter wether you edit/remove ei.cfg file..

Exactly if you add more versions to install.wim setup will display all versions with ei.cfg removed no need to edit ei.cfg. ei.cfg is equivilent to pid.txt in vista more for companies to restrict selection so user don't install wrong version. i think adding more versions to ei.cgf file would have been discussed long time before this if it was of any use to anyone.

I don't have a Technet EI.CFG, but a retail one. The ei.cfg-file also tells the setup if it is either a Retail, OEM or Enterprise Version DVD.
The wim-file has to have the entry for the versions you wish to add to the ei.cfg. Also the corresponding clg-file must be there. So yes, in some cases the install.wim must be updated. Hence I showed a second link in my previous post on this subject. It shows how to add other editions of Windows 7 to the install.wim.

I am in the process of making my own AiO-DVD which installs all Editions of Windows 7. That AiO-DVD will either boot in a WinPE x64 or WinPE x86. It will also include a Windows 7 x64 Starter Edition as well as the N-Editions. That one (Windows 7 Starter x64) has to be build from scratch, because it currently isn't provided by Microsoft.
