so, after wiping my hard drive, and installing Win 8.1 RTM.iso I was asked for key (serial from bios not auto detected)... but after wiping hard drive again, and adding ei.cfg file to the same iso, option to install Core or Pro appeared (I selected Core, as my MSDM table serial is for Core), and installation went ahead without asking for key and was activated at desktop.... I thought I might have needed to extract MSDM serial from bios and use slmgr.vbs -ipk to install key, but apparently not

Weird how that happens. I have never had to use a EI.CFG to reinstall Windows 8 on OEM laptops. I wonder what causes that to happen where it doesn't pull the key automatically.

I am confused personally on this. There is no way that this project can ruin your installation....if nothing else it wont be activated or have oem branding and theme is all. I would check hashes on that iso you got to see if it match microsofts iso hashes. I got my win 7 from digitial river.

I just tested the original and my modified version and both install in vmware but of course no activation but it did brand for vmware. I have been using this on my machine and my wife without any issue (both are win 7) oem activates and installs branding and theme.

I also got mine on digital driver sir, can you link me on the win7 you tested and I will add the $oem$ folder on the iso. Is the win7 you got equals to the win7 home prem OA?

    Thanks

did you put the $oem$ folder in the sources folder of the win 7 iso and save it? It has to be in correct location in order to see it but it still wouldnt break the installation. I unlocked all versions on my iso by editting the ei.cfg file so I can pick any version I wish on the iso. Digital river isnt OA but retail....this project makes it oem if you have windows 7 slic in your bios and is in the list which most are.

Also if using ultra iso to save the iso I would uncheck under config/save and uncheck everything in that tab and hit ok. I have found if left checked by default it will not save the iso correctly for installations.

Also maybe a corruption while downloading the iso from digit river......it happens.

@ cerberus8855, there is nothing wrong on the $oem$ folder side I just installed on a real machine the other day no problems at all.

I agree urie....I feel this is more of a corrupted iso more then anything or maybe some hardware failed on that machine.

Then logic suggests your 'boootable' USB is corrupt... I would suggest that you use either Poweriso or Ultraiso to edit the original Windows iso to ensure bootable image is preserved and burn to dvd at slowest speed to avoid file corruption.

Yeah anything but MagicISO as we have found out over the years o_O seems to be a bad culprit for failed ISO or cd/dvd installations.
