    @ cerberus8855, there is nothing wrong on the $oem$ folder side I just installed on a real machine the other day no problems at all.

    I agree urie....I feel this is more of a corrupted iso more then anything or maybe some hardware failed on that machine.

    Then logic suggests your 'boootable' USB is corrupt... I would suggest that you use either Poweriso or Ultraiso to edit the original Windows iso to ensure bootable image is preserved and burn to dvd at slowest speed to avoid file corruption.

    Yeah anything but MagicISO as we have found out over the years o_O seems to be a bad culprit for failed ISO or cd/dvd installations.

    I created a modified version to work with 8 and 8.1 for branding only for there is no oem shared keys for win 8 or win 8.1 but the branding works perfect. Check page 173 for download link.

    Is that just for branding and not activation.
    I have another I DL'd from you but I thought that it had the commands to activate via KMS which required Internet access.
    I may not have Internet access during initial OS installation. So, I want to run activation manually after installing OS and Branding automatically.
    So, I download that link on page 173 and place it in my sources folder and it's done?
    I'll run activation manually after the OS install with OEM branding is complete and I've setup my network connection.
    Am I correct that activation requires an active Internet connection?
    Thank you

    It cannot activate windows 8 or windows 8.1 for there are no more shared oem keys like in win 7 or vista so all you can do is use it for oem branding. You can create a setupcomplete.cmd file and add kms activation that way (add kms activator and setupcomplete.cmd in oobe.cmd file location) but to legit oem activation for windows 8 and 8.1 is not possible for even in oem machines the keys are specific not shared (if you own your own win 8 or 8.1 key then you can use the xml file to insert it during installation). Page 173 has newest and final modified where the one you have I had to make some corrections.

    Any chance someone can either tell me how, or make me up a copy of this that does NOT set the product key, but ONLY the branding?
    We tend to install 7 on machines that don't normally have 7, or on all-in-one systems that are gigabyte barebone kits. I would love to be able to automatically set up the branding(wallpaper, pictures, info, etc), but use the keys from the copies of 7 we install on each individual machine.

    Thanks!

    not exactly correct, I have Asus laptop with windows 8 'core' key stored in the bios... if I add 'ei.cfg' file together with '$oem$' folder to 'sources' folder of Windows 8.1 rtm iso, then during install I'm given option to install 'core' or 'pro', and provided I select 'core' (as it matches my bios key version), then install proceeds without request for serial, and serial auto installs.... if no legit key in bios, then install occurs but asks for key during oobe process, but has a skip option when 'ei.cfg' file is present in the sources folder.

    also, the brand theme does not apply as default, because in win 8/8.1 registry edits do not apply theme as default... wallpaper and screenlock images can be applied as default by renaming system images during oobe.cmd process

    Agreed but if not a real bought Win 8 or Win 8.1 machine then that will not work. Like you said, serial has to be in bios. Slight drawback.
    I have realized this also but it was no biggie to me for vista is the same as far as not showing oem wallpaper by default but user can choose it if they wish. I didnt know about the renaming but didnt want to edit your script that much for it is yours anyways. Tried to keep it simple and original as possible. Thanks for that info though. ;)

    @cerberus8855...

    no worries, I'm just thinking out loud... feel free to edit script as u like, I'm finished with the project as it exists.

    I'm just experimenting with the script, making some adaptations to set manufacturer branding as default, renaming some system files, and using runonce to rename system files back to normal, but leaving manufacturer images (Desktop & Lockscreen) as default in win 8.1... most of my family members now have win 8 oem machines, but all want factory recovery and bloatware removed, and most want to move from win 8 to 8.1.

    @Searchengine,

    I have added code so that it will activate windows 8 and 8.1 if key is in bios. Going to add the renaming of wallpapers this afternoon and do some through testing on all supported OS's then will post for you and others to look at and try. If you have any suggestions, I am open to them. Stay tuned... Thanks again Searchengine!

    @Pareto Optimal,

    Hang in there just a little while while I finish editing and testing and I will post for you to try. Give me a little time. Thank you.

    @serchengine,

    Thanks for sharing info but I can do little right now for my hdd went out and I ordered another one for my lappy....750 gig for $99. I am using my wifes lappy right now to do my school work and don't have my tools installed on this one for it isn't mine. I should be back online with my lappy by the end of next week at the most. I will try to check in here from time to time when I can. Just waiting for the new hdd.
