I have 2 4870X2's (QUADFIRE) and you can install legacy 12.6 on Windows 8 RTM by running the installer in compatibility mode for Windows 7. I have not played any games yet but everything appears to be working (crossfire, catalyst control center, etc.)
JonMS, thanks mate for the info. I'm still running win 8 under VMWare. I will try those drivers soon.
This is not news. It's been known for probably more then a month now that AMD has dropped support for the 4xxx series and below... You can still use whatever drivers are available for the 4xxx series anyway in W8, you just won't get WDDM 1.2 support, which isn't even a big deal anyway. And also, note the 5xxx series and up is still supported with AMD, so no, you won't have to fork out $350 for the HIS 7950. There are plenty of other 7xxx series cards that cost more/less then $350, and note what I just said about not even needing a 7xxx series card...
I have not gone through the previous entries. But I can install any old windows 7 driver on windows 8 by using the compatibility mode.
Still 12.7 beta the most accurate driver? I hope we do not need to wait until the end of month for driver which specialized for Windows 8.
Currently im using latest Catalyst 12.6 and they work perfect for me. Just need to run the installer in Windows 7 Compability mode.
I do not like Windows 7 drivers on Win 8, makes screen often flickering. I rather use Win 8 default driver with working OpenCL acceleration until something good driver coming from AMD.
Uhm,guys - anyone here figured out a way to get the video card to stretch the image to a laptop's native LCD resolution (aka built-in display graphics scaling) under W8? I've tried the method used under Windows 7 (drop the resolution > open catalyst/my built-in display options> select Full Screen > restore resolution), but it's a no-go, doing so allows me to select the option but it doesn't remember it nor activate it (even briefly)... I'm open to suggestions ? Ah,yes, the GPU is a HD3k-series, but using the methods mentioned in here I managed to get the 12.6 'legacy' driver to work on the system.
Well, you can disregard ^^^, I did a refresh of my Release preview (inadvertently to the 8 Pro RTM,because I used the wrong disk,LOL) and redid the instructions given here and this time 'round - GPU scaling works as advertised with the 12.6 'Legacy Catalyst' ))
Anyone else get weird game flickering in games? Running 6870 here. Monitor 1- 1920x1080, monitor 2- 1680x1050. In battlefield 3, it seems every time I'm about to die both my monitors would turn blank for a good 3 seconds even though I only use my primary monitor for gaming. I also use to be able to watch a video on my secondary monitor while in a game but now the videos seem like a frame rate problem waiting to crash my computer. Should I try installing the latest drivers for 7 on compatibility mode 7?
I have hp laptop dv6-6154tx model with ati readon hd 6490m card when I install windows 8 on it and install release preview driver i fund that in device manager my card recognized as 7440M but I have 6490m card and catalyst software not working and in details it says no dedicated graphics memory any one know why this is happen ?
For some reason my laptop keeps blue screening as soon as the HD 5000 gets installed. The same thing happenes when manually trying to install the driver. I tried the Windows 7, Windows 8 and the unofficial one and the result is always the same. Why does this happen?
its not supported the os thats why we are getting this type of problem when final driver release then probs will be solved .
