FYI I *believe* the codecs are actually to enable hardware decoding and transcoding of certain video formats. Anything done in hardware instead of software is normally better. It's faster and doesn't slow your PC down.

HxCPokecore, which specific driver did you install? Did you have to use any command-line arguments to install in Win7 mode? I'm having the same problem: Install CCC, stuck on WDDM 1.1 driver, so no video options in CCC. I need to adjust my overscan setting, it's driving me nuts!
Never mind...installed an older version of Catalyst package which had the specific driver for my HD 4600. Finally got my Overscan setting back, yay!
I've got a HD 4850, how do I get the latest driver for it? I installed 12.8 but no driver could be installed.
ATI dropped support for HD 2xxx,3xxx,4xxx you need to use for now Microsoft integrated drivers, they are considered as legacy devices in windows 8. ATI put a statement that they will make a drivers for legacy devices once per quarter, so probably they won't put legacy drivers before windows 8 release.
Follow the instructions in the first post in this thread - they certainly helped me out with the setup of my 3k-series card Ah,just in case it's not properly pointed out in the OP - you need Windows 7's 12.6 'Legacy' driver pack, not the Win8 ones (the reasons why have been laid out in this thread several times already ) Actually,no. They'll put legacy drivers only for XP/Vista/7. For Windows 8 only WDDM1.2-capable devices(aka 5k/Evergreen or newer) will see catalyst packs.
Still no working driver for my HD7600M card in my laptop. Strange since it on the list iDesmet provided in this thread. But I only get that Catalyst do not find any working driver (or something). And it's has the yellow warning in Device Manager. Not a big issue since I'm hardly never play games, and my newest game is Civilization V. But had to bee nice to really try out Windows 8 on all usage.
Sorry, but this bit about the release schedule of the LegacyCatalyst^ is somewhat irrelevant in the Windows 8 ATI/AMD driver thread, given the fact that the cards on legacy support (aka 2k/3k/4k's) won't see official drivers for the 8, as they are not WDDM 1.2 compliant.
I disagree, it's still relevant because you can (I do) easily install the legacy drivers on Windows 8 anyway, and people are still going to want to be able to update the drivers both from the stock MS legacy ATI drivers and as they release legacy updates. It's going to be very common for Windows 8 users with legacy devices to install these drivers, whether it's officially supported or not.
The people over at ATI/AMD that develop the drivers are very reasonable, if it is really needed and people are having real issues they will release a driver, I am sure. No, they do not release Legacy drivers quarterly, that was misconstrued from a statement where they said they would review on a regular basis about every three months whether or not a new release of legacy drivers were required before Windows 7 was even released. They do not release drivers on a regular basis for performance tuning legacy drivers because it makes no sense. Consumers that are performance oriented have long since upgraded. If you are having issues with getting drivers to work at all, ie., The Windows update drivers won't work at all or something of that sort by all means contact their support. If the issues are genuine and the hardware is being limited because of the lack of proper drivers I suspect they will release drivers. They can not and will not release drivers for older laptops because several years ago they were prevented from doing so under contract with the manufacturers of the laptops who wanted control over such things. Don't expect them to make a driver to make a legacy video card WDDM 1.2 compliant, it is a hardware limitation, not a software limitation. The folks over at AMD did release drivers drivers once for their x1xxx legacy video cards after Windows 7 was released because people were having genuine issues with some specific hardware but none since. I suspect a similar pattern with the HD4xxx and older graphics after the release of Windows 8. Expect one or two updates if there are real issues, nothing more.
Now if only I mentioned something along those lines a page ago.. like Either way,my point was that buksnatata's wording was kinda ambiguous and misleading(it seemed like a rebuttal to - ),so that's why I called his entire post irrelevant - because it didn't really give any new info . I do agree with you on that will see many people installing legacy 7 drivers in the coming months and I'd add to that that if we raise enough stink,we might still see official 2/3/4k drivers for 8. Btw,there's also the option of using DNA's drivers, but at least in my case those aren't exactly user friendly, because it's a bugger and a half to get UEFI to play nice with unsigned drivers I'm pretty sure noone expects them to do such a thing Now,what people are reasonable to expect is to see a more streamlined way to get decent drivers working on the 8, given the ample evidence that 8 can and will work properly with WDDM1.1-based cards thus making the whole 'we won't release W8 drivers for pre-Evergreen cards'-statement little more than an attempt to goad users into replacing a perfectly working card with a newer model. Edit2: Hell,if NVIDIA can release W8 drivers for cards as far back as the GF5-series, why in hell can't ATI do the same with the 2k/3k/4k ones ?
I read this thread and I see that some people posted that on their 4xxx card, they installed the 12.6 driver for windows 7 in (compatibiliy mode) and it worked for them. I tried to do the same but the install gets stuck here. An hour passed and it's still at this screen. Any idea on what to do?
(( copied )) Hello all, I've been testing Windows 8 with one of my old rigs which has a 4870X2, and as you may know, AMD decided to limit their *cough-crappy-cough* divers support of their "legacy" products, therefore, no new drivers for Windows 8 will be coming anytime soon for AMD's "legacy cards". Although Windows 8 has built-in drivers for legacy Radeon cards, with those default drivers you can't start CCC to adjust settings, and APP (AVIVO) applications don't seem to work, This almost cripples those graphics cards and limit almost all the functionalities of Catalyst software, so what can be done to resolve this and get the functionalities back? I tried to install the latest 12.6 legacy drivers for Windows 7, but the default installer does seem not to replace Windows 8's default drivers, so I tried to manually install the 12.6 drivers through Windows 8 device manager, and indeed they install fine, however, CCC does not start up and gives some error message instead, and APP applications seem to crash when APP is started, this happened with every single catalyst from 12.6 all the way down to 11.11. The best working solution I found is to uninstall any previously installed ATI software through the express uninstaller, then to install Catalyst 11.10. Catalyst 11.10 seem to be totally compatible with Windows 8 , and has a working CCC as well as installing 11.10 Xcode makes APP software work perfectly fine. I think those drivers are currently the best option to be used with Windows 8 if you have an HD 2000, 3000, or 4000 series card. Note : 8.951.1 March 3rd leaked drivers also work fine with Window 8 if you don't care about WHQL, those are newer than 11.10 but you'll lose OpenCL with them .
yup, 8.951.1 March 3rd leaked drivers works with switchable graphics as long as you install the manufacturer driver first. Have it working on a 4xxx card with intel graphics on battery.
Hello guys, can please someone write me how can i install on my windows 8 pro 64-bit drivers for ati 4xxx series? I have tablet hp touchsmart tm2 and it has switchable graphics cart. Thank you
