So I used the OEM x86 ISO to upgrade an HP stream 7 tablet. It successfully detected that it should upgrade to Windows 10 Home, however it remains unactivated after the upgrade. Has anyone run into this?
So is this the official Windows 10 Pro ISO? Is OEM ISO different from final retail one? I still can't figure out how to get the free copy since I own legit Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Do I need to register somewhere? I want clean installation, not update on top of already installed Windows 8.1...
Yes. No and No. What you want is nice, but you need to upgrade in order to be able to activate 10, takes only about 30 minutes. After upgrade and activation, you can do a clean setup as many times as you want..
Windows 10 RTM is dead (sorta) -- Long live Windows as a Service. Ever since news broke of Windows 10 reaching the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) milestone of development, my inbox has been full of people claiming that I’m wrong about build 10240 (the build released to Insiders) being the official Windows 10 RTM. Build 10240 is the RTM, but not in the traditional sense! Link: winbeta.org/news/windows-10-rtm-dead-sorta-long-live-windows-service
Why would I need to use an activator? This HP tablet has a legit Windows 8.1 key. I should be able to run the upgrade and have Windows 10 activated. I think I've read earlier today that current activation's are frozen until probably the 29th, and only computers that have previously had the technical preview activated on it are able to activate the RTM build after an upgrade. But I shouldn't have to use a KMS activator since I'm doing this the legitimate way.
You can clean install all you want, but you HAVE TO upgrade first. I just tried this. Tried clean install on another parition.-> not activated. Upgraded the legit W8.1 to 10 -> Activated. Then did a clean install of 10 and skipping the product key prompts, when booted up checked and it's activated. Only thing is that you have to upgrade it first once and then you can clean install when needed without worrying about upgrades or other nonsense.
You have to upgrade first and THEN you can do a clean install and if you don't like that your other option is to buy it but that is the only way to get it free.
