two PCs, one self assembled desktop and one HP laptop...both got update and both have "$Windows.~BT" folder (11: 00 AM CET) different ESDs (it's normal, one is home and other pro)... other differences: a) drivers folder (mainly video, audio and network, and an usb tv decoder b) desktop PC got a "DUDownload" folder, laptop no c) laptop has two empty folders "NewOS" and "Work", desktop pc no d) sizes are 3.71G for desktop PC, 5.38G for laptop... laptop has a "SafeOS" folder inside "Sources" folder: its content seems to be a kind of backup of laptop system folder (1.9G size total, 15145 files, 3397 folders)
So, I never wanted the upgrade... I even disabled that stupid GWX app two times. I never had my upgrade reserverd or anything... But still, I got that 5,4GB upgrade folder. Gee, thanks Microsoft! Now, how do I disable whatever has downloaded this and created a backup of stuff, so I can just delete that folder and it won't come back?
You would still have to have installed the optional update to get it or it wouldn't be downloading..... Doubt it could happen without one or both of these installed. For Windows 7 SP1: KB3035583 KB2952664 For Windows 8.1 Update: KB3035583 KB2976978 If you had GWX you did install them...So not MS fault
True. I have those. Still, I never asked for actually getting the upgrade, so why is Windows downloading 3,4GB and making a 2GB backup of my files, without even asking? I don't check in detail, before installing, what the optional updates do, because they usually read "Fixes problems with Windows". Anyway, thanks for that info. Uninstalling those now.
Because you installed the optional Windows updates that do so. They were Optional not installed automatically
Guess what I'm seeing after uninstalling the updates you mentioned? They are marked as important, not optional. And they both read: Install to fix problems with Windows.
Any pros and cons using the install.esd instead of waiting for the OK to upgrade from GWX? (or maybe someone can tell us what "bytes" to "swap" in GWX to "fast forward"
No, I don't click every updates info link before I install it. Again, they are marked as important, so they auto install anyway. Also, I specifically remember that I've disabled one of them, weeks ago, and obviously it reinstalled itself anyway. And by the way, after uninstalling both updates I still can't delete that c:\$Windows.~BT\ folder. It's redoing the backup part again and again. So I guess something else is still at work here.
My preload for my Surface Pro 3 (so: Windows 8.1 Pro, x64, Italian) stopped at 5,64GB downloaded. Very pumped to upgrade the official way (and then clean install from created recovery media)
Woohoo - Dell Latitude D630 running W7Pro 64bit - folder created overnight, it's up to 3.5GB now but no .ESD inside yet, still uploading ... Haven't check my Sony Viao as it's running 8.1 and reserved. Optiplex 580 desktop running W7Pro 64bit also but no folder created, yet - also reserved. Fios router is very busy, blinking as I watch, LOL.
