When an update fails to install, I don't even bother trying to fix things due to how often none of the proposed fixes actually work. Easiest way out is to build an up to date image and then do an in place install.

Sounds like things were seriously broken to begin with. I do in place installs all the time for "stuck" updates. Its never a problem. I would not recommend something I don't do myself.
It has nothing to do with you and it does not matter what experience you had. I already did in-place upgrade before and I know how many things it breaks. Many things my current system i know relies on. I rather wont update for next 2 years until 22H2 LTSC than resort to this bull. That being said, I've already managed to fix some of the broken components but a few things still elude me. it is probably possible to fix them too but it requires Widows knowledge a very few people posses.
