Probably not a chance of being able to do that because that would mean it's free for everybody forever and that's not what they are offering.
There will be an option to download an ISO (was on the Q&A page from this upgrade dialog). If they dont offer a key before you install upgrade extract the key once upgraded then download the ISO inject key and files from activated windows 10 install into it then reinstall with that. Same method of creating a Windows 8 pre activated ISO should also work with windows 10. Hope they just give you the key and a link to download the ISO for offline install though.
At that time I hope we can backup/save the already activated w10 rtm data, then using activated data to replace the original w10 rtm iso, and make the activated w10 rtm iso ourselves for future use.
That explains a lot, I though those cabs were the actual update... About the clean install stuff. They can always register your HWID if you do the upgrade, and then use that HWID to activate your clean installs. You'd just need to do the upgrade once. Or maybe they save your HWID with GWX right now already, that's also an option. EDIT: Got the tool installed, I'm going to wireshark it to see if it sends something to MS. I mean to see what it sends, cause it will certainly send something...
But it's the MDL way... Thanks for your replies, I still think this could warrant a dedicated sticky topic. Any ideas for a clear and informative topic title? (something with "install media", "activated", "free", etc.)
Nothing to see in wireshark... Lots of plain text HTTP requests when you switch between pages in the update app, but the actual packets that are sent when you click on the reserve button are TLSv1 encrypted
Didn't someone post some quote of some MS engineer that they will actually store your activation online? Ie you don't need a key as long as your hardware id stays the same, install w10 > checks if your hardware id has a valid license > activates you, it's technically possible at least even if it may require a MS account (which is enforced! you need to disconnect LAN to see local account creation) At the end of the day i doubt it will matter though, they make it seem like all you get is a watermark with no limitations because they want pirates on W10 too and sooner than later there will be Windows for 0$ straight from Microsofts website
My digitallife windows 7 with loader got invitation icon for windows 10. Ive read thru the thread but wanna ask, are u sure we can go thru the invitation and will work, or it will it find disgusting our windows 7 homemade backup (we all have a legally valid license purchased that we store in a security box because of the chance of a tsunami wiping it out of course)
Block the notification: Code: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Gwx] "DisableGwx"=dword:00000001
Yes, that's what I'm afraid of. "Only on that machine", doesn't sound too good to me at all. I hope we can still find a way to use a "general" iso to install "any" PC, activated and all. Hope that's possible...
That's what the offer is though. A free upgrade from 7 or 8 and free for "the life of the machine". Today if you own a license for windows 8 you can call them and transfer it to another machine and that's because it uses a key. They deactivate it from the current machine allowing you to activate another machine. This says that won't be possible which is why I think there won't be a key.
