In case the MS Servers can breath a moment during all the DDOSing from addicteds, there are several ways to download Win 10 tis time. [*=1]MSDN [*=1]ISO from Microsoft directly (only desktop Client versions) [*=1]single-index ISO via Media Creation Tool On the other hand some here are also mirroring/magnetizing them atm. The Forums was too sluggish to check properly. Stay tuned.
This is exactly what I did...I ran the update by downloading the Windows 10 iso file directly from MS this morning (from the host) and then mounting the iso to the DVD drive of the VM in settings. After Windows 10 finished installing over 8.1 Pro on the VM all my files and settings were still there but some strange display problems and couldn't connect to the Internet through the VM...I reinstalled VMware tools and rebooted and that fixed display issues but not network. I had to go into network settings of the VM in Windows 10 and manually enable IPv4 protocol (it was disabled). Now all is good and a previously KMS activated copy of Win 8.1 Pro is showing up now as a permanently activated copy of Windows 10 (using "slmgr /dli" command). I'm sure the minor issues are just related to VMware only. So I guess all is good here? Everyone can go home and install Windows 10!
Hi, So, after reading some users reports, it seems that one can get permanent activation of win 10 pro when upgrading from 8.1 pro that was previously activated with KMS solution (MTK, etc.). And according to the 1st post, one can keep this win 10 permanent activation after a new fresh install of it with format. Does this mean one doesn't need to do a new activation or enter a key during this all process? Is it auto made by win 10 installer? How can it remember activation after a format? Does it need MS account to work or local account is enough? Can I use multi edition RTM iso from MSDN to do so or are there other methods?
No keys needed for the Free Upgrade ... if it asks, SKIP it babe . No need to remember anything, if you do it correct, the MS Server will do (i.e. your machines HWID).
So all KMS activated Windows 8.1 are getting a generic MAK key, similar to how retail gets a generic retail key?
There are basically two ways to upgrade an existing Win 8.1 or Win 7 install.... 1...Allow the "Get Windows 10" update utility to download and install when it prompts you that it's ready which is likely to occur randomly at some time over the next month or so. 2...Download the ISO or USB installer for Windows 10 from Microsoft's website directly and initiate a manual update over your existing and updated Win 8.1 or Win 7 install...as I did on the VM I described in the above post. No key was asked for me and I don't think they will ask for one (if you are asked...skip it). After the update is complete Windows 10 will automatically activate as long as it has an Internet connection. If you'd like to have a clean install of Windows 10 you can either purchase a license or upgrade an existing install of Win 7 or 8.1 on the same hardware and then create an installer from that later....not exactly sure how to do this but it's described on Microsoft's website. My understanding is that you can still temporarily activate Windows 10 using existing KMS servers but why would you do that when you can get a permanent activation using the above method?
Nice so a KMS is not needed with Win10 and not having to worry about get deactivated in the future since it's a generic key that can't be blacklisted.
Yes. However when you do a clean install on a kms activated upgrade it will convert to generic retail key. I just recently did that.
Whats the likely chance they will make generic MAK computers non-genuine in the future? they could have disabled this from the very beginning during the last few insider builds. I don't mind using 7 with Loader > upgrade 120 but trying to avoid a clean install. Also as naseap says after a clean install it's a retail key, sure it's flagged but it should change to a retail key with a clean install. That just says if KMS upgrade install MAK key, but sider side it one and the same thus getting a retail key after clean install.
anyway of skipping the hardware compatibility test ? running windwows 8.1 pro on a VM ESXI 6.0 it said VGA is not compatible with the update
Guys I used CCleaner with the file they provide in their forums to clean more stuff and the notification icon disappeared after reboot, I ran the commands in the OP but nothing comes up, tried the GWX exe's... I'm using Dazzed Win7 Ultimate x64 and had already signed for the free upgrade
