Found a solution to trigger the upgrade, if the instructions in the OP didn't work for you, try this: Source: windowscentral dot com (can't post links...)
So we can upgrade from MS Toolkit Activated Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 Pro and get permanent activation? This will save me so much time as I have been wiping all of my spare 8.1 machines, installing 7 with daz, upgrading, then clean install.

Hi all! If I want to activate Windows 10 with KMS, must I absolutly use the external server (kms.xspace.in) or the KMS Server service of the latest Microsoft Toolkit can enable it correctly?
thats why we never use them (we as in the smart people using emulators.) They never stay forever. Besides, who knows what is logging what at the other end, everyone complains about MS stealing data, what about these online KMS and logging IP's to hack your systems? Enjoy
Noob question here, but I must ask it. What would be the ultimate worst case scenario if Microsoft somehow "bans" all these Windows 10 copies that are using KMS activation? would it be possible for them to blacklist your PC entirely from Windows 10? (even when activating with a legit retail copy afterwards?), or is the worst case scenario just the deactivation of the current licence?
Seems to me their ultimate goal isn't to blacklist anybody, but rather to enlist ever more folks into the fold, encourage all to have a Microsoft "account" with which to login, thereby giving them access to all kinds of little bits about you and your habits which they can sell to advertisers - thus money. Giving Google a run, eh? Now, a step further I would guess they want to eventually get us all to buy Windows as a service for a given monthly fee (like $9.95, $15.95, etc.) while we all store everything in "the cloud" (really just someone else's computer). This will allow ever more "personalized" service and targeted advertising. Doesn't that sound great???? :^)
I can't see what the whole problem is. MSTK 2.5.3 works fine with windows 10 as long as you insert the key first. MSTK does not have to contact a online server like "kms.xspace.in" which can go offline at any time. I activated windows 10 with no network connection and then for safety disabled updates via windows services.
