Some very interesting posts on this thread. I have several machines, and have gone from 7.1 with DAZ loader to 10. Worked fine provided that internet was on all the time. My main machine is running 8.1 which I happen to like. It was activated with Microsoft Toolkit, and I did not want to accept the offered update as I think it would not activate. I have clicked no thanks many times, and was not expecting to find the 10 files on my machine. After reading this thread I checked with Search Everything (which is a million times better than any Microsoft Search Tool). It showed $Windows.~BT with only 33KB and $Windows.~WS with 4.53 GB (read only and hidden). As a Microsoft fan for over 25 years I must say I was very surprised to find these folders. Fortunately my internet is unlimited so there was no cost. The creation date is shown as 01 August 2015. I will not try to remove these files as I do not want to damage the 8.1 installation. Updates are set to Automatic, so perhaps I should have read the notes more carefully. I will be reading with great interest what the experts have to say. All I can say is that I continue to receive invaluable help from members on this board - many thanks for all your hard work.
I honesly wonder WHY m$ is doing this. They tried giving this piece of crap for FREE and didnt work(ed). And now this?. Forcing EVERYONE to download an UNSOLICITED "update" to 10. There is a legal loophole to allows this?! To people who ACTUALLY PAID for this crappy OS? Forcing them to "update". This is the last straw. :fuyou31:
Just saw this - abbodi post (30-Jul). Win 8.1 and Win 7 Telemetry and Win 10 upgarde updates uninstaller script. This post.
I was scared that this was happening to me yesterday. But I realised after a bit of trial and error, it was because I stopped and disabled "Software Protection" and "SPP Notification Service" via Windows Services. I turned my legit install into a pirated one! Rectified after reboot... phew!
Yea they are large files. And Why are they so large and different sizes to different computers???????
Not all 7GB are downloaded, some files get extracted and prepared (i.e. winre.wim) the sizes varies because newer drivers (if available) are downloaded as well also the current cumulative Windows 10 update and if the upgrade didn't happen and another cumulative released, it also downloaded, previous one won't be deleted regardless the failed installation attempts, i believe no auto-upgrade will occur maybe that's why it fails
I'm still confused by this! So are ppl saying that the registry entries to disable the OS upgrade don't work!? Originally posted by abbodi and referred to in in this post - can anyone verify - that does or doesn't work to stop the Win 10 upgrade?
