Thanks for the fix... I know ways to create a user, but others might not, so you might want to add it to the readme/first post...
Thank you , but I'll wait for your next version I too want the fixes the others guys posted, I like to add my own request... is it possible to automatically change file associations defaults from Windows 7 as like in Windows 7. I use my custom .bat file to run the all the .reg files to do this. It be nice to add this to your awesome program. Thanks
one more suggestion: If you can find the time, please add some switches to the installer to a) allow silent installation (and switches to tell the installer were the explorer files are) b) allow silent switching this would really help a lot in unattended installation and everyday use...
For me it works perfect, switching ex7-ex8 by context menu, in v8. I have uninstalled v7beta...installed v8...and switching is the same, as before @Tihiy: For switching 7<>8 (by GUI) I think, it's much faster (=more comfortable) if your're kill explorer-task and start new one (as some people do manual at the moment, by using script), so you don't need log off/log on.
Any chance of including a change log of all versions? Just want to know what has been updated/upgraded/fixed? Again if possible . Thanks anyway, works perfectly about 98% of the time
Agreed. That would help a lot. Maybe have the app check it's own root folder for the needed files prior to asking. That way we can already have the files with the EXE and it can just be automatic like it was before and not get asked at all. The installation was a little awkward compared to the betas. Before we just ran the app, selected 7 and Y, poof, done. This time I had to run the app, wait for an extraction, then it did the install, then it asked for the files then it took a little while for the actual app to come up. At first I thought it died on me but it eventually came up. Also, I got some memory error with explorer.exe the first time it logged off. But that machine has been through a few version so...probably just a fluke.
That's how it is now. It won't ask for files if they're present in the program folder. Sometimes wim extracting can trigger long delays (up to minutes), i haven't found why yet. Taskkill and explorer restart can potentially lead to something linger in memory. I'll try to find sth more intellegent.
Nope, I had the files in the same folder as your version 8 EXE and it asked me to go find the files. I pointed it to the same exact folder that your EXE is in and then it continued. I wasn't doing any wim extracting, I provided the files. Also, in your OP - "Windows Server 2010 RTM"
That's not possible. It would at least choke trying to copy files into themselves. Unless you mean you put installer into folder with files? Patching is exactly the same and should take several seconds. I don't get your experience.
I've just tried this new version and everything as stated by the OP is working well, and the context menu which is working well too. I just replaced the older beta files with this new into the same folder. Thanks OP...
Like I said, that machine had seen all the betas so...I went ahead and reloaded the machine. This time around, no memory errors and it found explorer on it's own. But the app still takes a good 20 seconds just to load. Not sure what's going on there. So just a bit of caution for those that have patched and unpatched a million times. If you have any issues, blow out your install.
I'll improve patching speed. About command-line and scripting: i suppose i'll add a simple helper exe (not requiring UAC elevation) to do this sort of stuff: Code: Usage: /patch - patch explorer.exe. No checks performed. /setexplorer7 [/logoff] - set windows 7 (current explorer.exe) as shell for current user [and logoff]. /setexplorer8 [/logoff] - set windows 8 (system explorer.exe) as shell for current user [and logoff]. /runexplorer7 - exit running explorer.exe and run windows 7 (current) explorer.exe. /runexplorer8 - exit running explorer.exe and run windows 8 (system) explorer.exe. What you think? Answer in PM, please keep topic clean. I don't intend to add a gazillion of customization options, be modest, my dear freeware friends.
Would it be patching speed? That was just for the app to load, before you pick 7 or 8. I'm not worried about. Other people didn't complain so it could be just my machine. That would be awesome.
I've been following this for awhile. and I have to say thanks for making this. This makes windows 8 bearable. And out of all the software I used to get the start menu back. I like this method the best!. It just works
