What does the Network Connection Popup started from Systray look like with the Windows 7 explorer.exe?
It just doesn't work. However, it should work in next version, but it will look the same. I've tried porting win7 one, but it requires many files and doesn't work well yet.
Out of curiosity, wouldn't anything like this be defeated by SFC-like protection? I mean, I'd imagine you have to maul the system pretty badly to switch to the transplanted explorer?
No, it does not change anything in system (except Shell registry key, like installing any other alternate shell). It doesn't even need UAC (currently it does - compiler bug). And the wrapper is thin, win8 is not so far from win7 (maybe it's less - more cut functions).
Привет, Тихий, Doesn't work in Win8 RP 64-bit Russian. What I did: First, I took explorer.exe from Win 7 SP1 32-bit and MUI from C:\Windows\ru-ru\explorer.exe.mui patched fine with your program, when logging in, just explorer window opened, no desktop. I noticed that when manually opened this patched 32-bit explorer.exe, it opens for a second, closes, and opens original 64-bit explorer.exe with command line: Code: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /factory,{ceff45ee-c862-41de-aee2-a022c81eda92} -Embedding I thought the problem was that I was using 32-bit explorer.exe so I got 64-bit file (from Win 7 SP1 again) and again a Russian MUI. Again, patched it fine, installed, when logging in, I just get black screen. Manually if trying to run patched explorer.exe, it won't run at all, If trying to open original explorer.exe from C:/Windows, it runs fine. Any ideas?
Well you get black screen if mui file doesn't load. Make sure both exe and mui file are from 64-bit system and you placed them to proper directories. I've just tested it on 32-bit W8RP russian, made folder c:\7 and placed explorer.exe/mui from w7sp1ruenterprise iso to c:\7\explorer.exe c:\7\ru-RU\explorer.exe.mui and placed patcher there and all was fine. Note: If you're totally out of luck or you want to run explorer.exe without having MUI in right language, you can merge explorer.exe.mui and explorer.exe in Restorator (add all resources from mui to exe, except Version, delete 'MUI' resource table) and use exe only.
Can we get an upcoming changes (what to expect in the new release) in the first post ? Also dose anyone know of a project to port new Windows 8 copy files dialog/progress windows (one with graphs while copying) to Windows 7 ?
That will be a cool project to change the Metro theme of Windows 8 to Windows 7 Aero, thus for everybody better than the ugly Metro theme
Why not just use vistart or classicshell surely there's no need to make windows 8 explorer into a frankenbuild. But Daz does have a point here, you would be better off using windows 8 code to patch it.
has anybody tried this with DP explorer? could the patch work with files from DP? or does it check for win7 files and abort otherwise?
Can we have a change log ? Whats changed since last release ? And also what's comming in next version ?
Please god, its spelled "coming". Coming. Its easy. Its "Come" and "ing" stuck together. Like "Aboding" and "Advancing". You remove the "e" and stick on the "ing". Sometimes you keep the "e" like in "ageing" but you NEVER NEVER add another "m". Every time I see "comming" it makes me cringe, and I see it all the ruddy time. so please PLEASE learn to spell. I mean, there's even a spellchecker built into most browsers, so there is really no excuse. Remember that the DP explorer is missing the dual taskbars like in 7. That's the only reason I'm not using this mod. Now, what would be interesting is to see if this method would work the other way around, so you could have a dual taskbar Windows 7 install. Stick on Classic Shell or Start8, and you're cruising. Why? Because that's what crazy internet people do. Fiddle.
Next version will have improvements for RTM themes as well new (restored) shell functionality like network popups. However it's coming in 2 weeks, not earlier. Current version works with RTM but looks dull. I wonder how it looks in RTM with RP theme.
I would not play with those files. Have you ever thought about security updates or hotfixes for explorer.exe? They get released from time to time. If you then re-patch the explorer.exe with your Windows 7 files on Windows 8, that's not good. Some people should not trifle with some files.
Great work man! I wont use win8 without this. Hope you find a way to fix Win+P and pin to start menu You should really come up with some unique name for this...
