browse to C:\Windows then copy explorer.exe
browse to C:\Windows\en-US then copy explorer.exe.mui

I guess you're Dutch, according to your name!:D

In that case you should look at C:\Windows\nl-NL and there you'll find the explorer.exe.mui-file!;)

Important however is that both Windows-versions (7 and 8) must be of the same language!:excl:

has anyone tried this yet with the windows 8 leaks(using their explorer, rather than windows 7)
and also, does anyone happen to know what the last build of 8 was to have a functional start menu? I think it would be best to use as late a copy as possible, as it would be most compatible. but use late enough a copy that it isn't a charms menu or metro itself.

because explorer does not only imply the -file- explorer functionality. It's the start menu, the taskbar, and MUCH more. This is a -shell- replacement. gets rid of that -garbage- metro bull and gives us a -proper- -windows- desktop.

Huh the perfect build Microsoft created til now with no Modern UI crap, fast boot, and hidden rtm features(ribbon UI on explorer asf):

    7989.winmain.110421-1825.6**********4

but F**K M$:fuyou31:, it is timebombed and not activable anymore:mad:

It is the nearest one, that i think will better replace the 7 explorer one!

If needed, just ask, it is golden code in my collection!:naughty::naughty:

just wondering if you happen to have a copy of this build, or know where it can be found? I can't seem to find a copy anywhere!

okay so I managed to find a copy of the aforementioned explorer.exe from the leaked build of windows 8 in question, and I got an error message. I kind of didnt have a lot of time when I did it, but I got an error about "getimmersivemode" or something.
so I think maybe it's depending on something that was later removed. we may have to go back even further.

I have tested in windows 8 x64 Enterprise evaluation , the patcher can run well, but after lock off and lock on , desktop screen becomes black screen, only mouse cursor is present.

However, thank you for your sharing.

Note, I also tested ClassicShell program v.3.6, the program can work but there are side effects, computer frequently self restart ( once for every 2-3 hrs ) and also sometime, keyboard becomes error , ie @ shows as " , files copy is also very slow

Note. correction of W8 version as x64

Sorry for the off-topic, but the side-effects you mention have nothing to do with Classic Shell. I've been (and still am) using Classic Shell since the Consumer Preview and now on the Enterprise x64 RTM, and never have any side-effects like you mention.

I did actually end up finding a copy of it and grabbed the explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui.
at the very least this patch isn't compatible with it. that, or this explorer simply does not work without some form of dependencies that were removed later or something.
On bootup, I just get a black screen. But if I try launching explorer.exe manually using the task manager, I get the following error:
"The procedure entry point GetImmersiveMode could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\explorer7\explorer.exe."
(obviously C:\explorer7 is the location I put the patcher and whatnot)

Windows 7 shell on Windows 8
This works really well - thanks Tihiy for sharing.

Just a comment on black screen - I initially omitted to create the sub dir "en-US" under "C:\explorer7" and place the file "explorer.exe.mui" inside it.
    This caused the black screen.
    Most important to create "C:\explorer7\en-US\explorer.exe.mui"
Once I corrected my error it worked in both my Server2012x64 RTM and Win8 Prox64 RTM VHD's without any problems (activated and none activated versions).

Why is this drama still going on? SHUT UP. THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. THIS IS A THREAD ABOUT PORTING WINDOWS 7 SHELL TO WINDOWS 8.
NOT the place to FIGHT or DISCUSS YOUR PERSONAL OPINIONS about metro.
This is ABSOLUTELY NOT the place to insult each other. If you don't like this project GTFO.
There -ARE- people who -DO- want it, and -DO- want to see it succeed. There are -NOT- however, any people in here aside from you -CHILDREN- who -WANT- to see all this -STUPID- drama!

You hate each other. Great. We get it. Take it elsewhere or drop it.

Now. That being said, the progress on trying to use a pre-metro copy of windows 8's explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui is going nowhere. I would greatly appreciate some help in attempting to get it to work.

That being said, any thoughts? what is GetImmersiveMode?

    Same to you.

Immersive Mode IS Metro. Odds are it was called something else in that build unless it wasn't there at all yet... At any rate, the author would need to alter his code to adjust for changes. My guess is, it's not worth it. He's not willing to distribute MS's code (for good reason) so he'll have to use a build that's readily available to everyone. If it's as simple as skipping functions it doesn't find, maybe that'll fly. If it can be made to be universal, that would be cool. But I'm sure it's not top priority.
