I'm not sure what you mean by distributing microsoft's code, but on the note of making this universal, it shouldn't be hard. as far as I can tell, this just patches the windows 7 shell to be compatible with something or other in windows 8. that being said, a windows 8 shell should work in windows 8. the only issue would have to be the renaming of metro.
I might try substituting the explorer.exe directly, rather than trying to use a patch. I'll post back if I find anything else, but if anyone has any other suggestions they are welcome as well :)

    Well, Windows 8 is:

Much faster. Starts up faster, shuts down faster, installs faster.
    Much improved task manager.
Can mount ISO out of the box.
Has HyperV built in which is fraking amazing!
....the list goes on and on but that should be more than enough.

That's why people want Win8 but also want the start menu.

explorer.exe and explorer.exe.mui. It would be illegal for the author to distribute those. So the author would want everyone to easily be able to get a hold of them on their own. If people had to jump through hoops to find a specific version...that would suck.

But yeah, it should be easy enough. It's over my coding head however.

In case it's not been said enough. Greatly appreciated!

Side story, I'm working on a project that easily (plug and play) fixes a problem that has plagued Nissan XM radios since as far back as 2007 (probably earlier). It's utterly disgusting how Nissan hasn't fixed it yet and I was rather shocked to see no one else has either. All their one line radios only display the first 8 characters of any piece of info instead of the displays maximum. What a joke! Anyway the support from the Nissan crowd has been great.

Doing everything right but still get a black screen on re-logon and have to start explorer manually, after that 8 explorer starts. o_O

Edit: Duh, it was the directory, all set now.

    This is great.
Had to register when I stumbled across this
I have posted on a few other sites where the complaining is the same except there is no fix on them yet.
I have ideas but I doubt they would work....had given up on 8 up until now, have thought about porting Win 8 DP files to rtm in the hope of being able to use the RPEnable registry hack... but I will end up setting fire to the north pole before I get it right, I don't mind not having a start menu or even a taskbar for that matter as I'm using rainmeter and no longer need them as such for example if I want to change network settings all I do is make a shortcut or add a icon to the rainmeter skin that points to the said program or application when clicked, if there is a way to get the win 7 legacy network and clock and open with apps to work then this will be the most downloaded tweak for win 8 in all of time.

    Good news, Everyone!

Beta 4 landed - attached to first post - major improvements
    - Start menu pin list functionality reimplemented! :hug2:
    - Start menu MFU program list functionality reimplemented (albeit a bit inferior thus far).

When upgrading, you must first run patchex7 and select "8", then re-logon in order to be able to replace files. After replacing files, run patchex7 and select "7".
Note that patchex7.exe changed to utilize 7.reg/8.reg when used. You can examine what changes in registry.

    To help this project:
    - Spread the word, people are still using heavy tools to get inferior start menu clones. There are still major usability issues without metro bits present, but i hope users can live with that... and some day they shall be gone, with your help.
    - Send me (via PM) strings 5381-5385 from your localized shell32.dll.mui from win7, extracted with some resource viewer.

Thanks for the update. Do you plan to add win 7 interface for managing wifi, VPN, etc ? But maybe it's hard to do that ?

Aero will never be back on RTM, beacause DWM.exe and all related dll's are missing.....
Even this can be done, it can Work just with a "OLD" (as Microsoft clearly stated that Aero is outdated ) computers where Windows 7 Gpu drivers support that.
When new machines come out with new Gpu drivers and hardware, in more cases Aero will blow or slow down(Drivers with DWM support missing) machines, as was when in XP Aero was ported to it

Nope, this will big a too much effort worth of nothing ball game that lasts sooo long, how much time you will sit and look at it???

i will say NEVER Aero with full DWM in WIndows 8!

7 will compensate that lack for more that 10 years, then we will see what Microsoft, Apple and Google will offer in the future :D

That doesn't change the fact that it's a whole other ball game that has nothing to do with this project. I take it you didn't understand the saying? Sorry, it's an American thing I guess.
