Well, since I heard nothing back from Mediafire (after filling in the 'how come' form) or Microsoft (the email address thas was given) about the claim the old update remover was a breach of copyright, I uploaded the 23 Jan version :).

I just need to find a reg entry to satisfy WU, if you or anybody finds it let me know

Edit: seems to not be needed for KB2538242, KB973544 is what is being pushed now

    This is getting confusing

Edit: I dont yet have a fix for KB973544 and VC2k5 (KB2538242 no longer seems to be a problem) but I think I have a better solution for KB2538243 and VC2k8

    Link removed, see post bellow

I simply changed the ProductCode in the Property table to match the one from the MSI's of KB2538243, this will generate the registry key that WU is looking for

Adding something after it currently will make it 'quiet' (such as typing auto), as in run through the process and exit without prompts, it that what you mean?

Cool thanks :) its kind of what I have in the script, except the script is in a very cut down sort of way. Since its the only option necessary I thought having it so it can be anything after it would be more practical than a set command. I did get your PM, its definitely something I will do as it would be useful. I'll do that later today (its almost 6AM Thursday here) since its a public holiday here...

burfadel is it possible if you could also include the SP1 installations of the C++ Redists. Thanks

Can someone help out a poor noob to figure out how to (or, maybe, whether I should) use the tools & resources referenced in this thread to make my Win7 life happier?

I have five Win7 boxes - one is x86, the rest x64, one is a HTPC box. All are using Windows 7 "Fire" by bensam/Rockers, and running Daz' Windows Loader 2.1. I tinker/customize my computers enough that I sometimes have to go out and find a hotfix for something that isn't in Windows Update, but it doesn't happen all that often.

I've just rebuilt my HTPC, and I've run Windows Update up through SP1 ... I especially like the idea of avoiding installing a bunch of superceded updates, and I imagine that with the HTPC, where I'm trying to do some funky stuff like bitstreaming HD audio etc, that I might end up running into hotfixes I need that aren't being released through updates. Is there a post-SP1 updates/hotfixes file I can just download and install that will have everything I need/want? Or given my description of my level of complexity/noobishness, should I just stay away from the deep end of the pool?

I confess that I (obviously) haven't read every post in this thread - sorry if I've missed answers to my questions or a link to the "Hotfix repository FAQ for clueless noobs"...

thanks for any advice/assistance you can provide...

Thanks Rick - that sounds like exactly the stuff I'm most in need of! I saw your .net link (and I've used Shark007 before) but hadn't stumbled onto the others yet...
