Well, the whole point of the patch files is that you can switch between images of [to keep it simple] the same size. So you search for a hash of an ISO image with the same size, get that image, and switch it to the desired image(s).
Thanks, actually I was aware about the Edition Switcher, but it was originally made in 2009 for the first Win7 ISOs. As for SP1 included, the additional patches posted by BitSwitcher (THANKS!!!) are all you need to obtain ANY version at your choice. Thanks again.
For such a cool little app (this and Windows7IsoVerifier) that I d/l & used long ago, sure are a lot of people putting it down!! I have to agree with what others say on the merits of this little app. One other point that is also a PLUS is the fact that it is FREE! Is there even a decent ISO editing tool that is free? And don't say ARRR!!!
Same thing happened a while back when someone posted info on how to make a Windows 7 ISO from files using CDIMAGE so hashes matched original, as in ISO made WAS an original. I would have to look up name of poster, don't recall right now. Wannabes will always bag things they don't understand.
Indeed, having gone through the long drawn out procedure of unpack, modify, repack with CDIMAGE for Win7 RTM, I have to say that your tool has saved me several hours work for Win7 SP1 and I very much appreciate it. Though I will probably still build my own server+client or x64+x86 combined or client+languages or some such thing just to keep in practice. One thing I would do differently though, for the "multiple" editions would be to have a volume label without the "MU" edition specifier, no ei.cfg at all, and no "R" or "O" at the end: a completely generic one "GRMCFRE_EN_DVD" and "GRMCXFRE_EN_DVD" similar to what the generic one was in the Vista era before the blasted ei.cfg came along. Off topic, I wonder how many GBs a combined all server editions + all client editions + all languages + localpacks + x64 and x86 all in one ISO would be, would it fit on a BD-ROM ? If I build one I am NOT gonna host it anywhere, lest you guys come along and suck down all my Internet.
The OP is not the author of the tool, though. I've contacted the author (about a bug in his pendmove tool), and he confirmed that he isn't in these forums. I think most of the credit should go to BitTwister/BitSwitcher for supplying the patches; that requires a lot of effort.
"GRMCFRE_EN_DVD" (no ei.cfg) and "GRMCMUFRER_EN_DVD" (ei.cfg containing "[Channel] Retail" only) are effectively the same. I simply wanted the changes to be minimal (not counting what ei.cfg Removal Utility does) and thus keep the label at the same length.
This nifty tool saved me! Originally I posted this and was about to download a RETAIL version then reformat - and then i was able to solve it with this tool. Thanks MDL! from what I understand, this tool does not unpack / repack the ISO. it "EDITS" the ISO bit per bit (or byte per byte) to change the text in EI.CFG to OEM to RETAIL and vice versa ? cool!
Exactly right, that's the one I've been using, and it works great. I have long since forgotten who the OP of this thread is, when I said "your tool" obviously I am referring to the person(s) who designed and provided it. So a big generic thanks to all whose efforts have provided benefit.
This tool only works for the English ISO? Or can it be used with other languages also? (dutch: nl-NL)
English only so far for SP1 7601, read back a few pages and for RTM 7600 some other languages are covered with additional patch files; I didn't see anything for nl-NL though. Perhaps BitSwitcher would be so kind as to explain how the patch files themselves are created?
