Windows 7 running programs from XP era w/out buying win7 utlimate?

    Would like to run some old programs I use to run when I had winXP. Is there any way to do it without buy win7 ultimate? I tried installing virtual machine but I don't know what to do and how to get it up and running. Thanks.

    Many of the XP apps and from before will just works in Windows 7. Special if Windows 7 you use is 32bit! You also has all times the choice for to set apps in Compatibility Mode to their native OS Version. In 32bit Windows you could although use old 16bit apps.
