you get it via having all the windows 8 updates then windows 8.1 is from store once your fully updated....short story only visible when all updates installed.
To elaborate, there are 2 ways to get a "USABLE" install.esd file for application purposes. 1) Upgrade via the windows 8.0 store and at about 50% it creates a separate install.esd file from the downloaded encrypted one. Copy/paste that from the $Windows.~BT\sources\ folder to a different directory because it will get deleted after the upgrade process is finished. 2) Downloading an ISO version for your product key that you purchased from Microsoft. After purchasing your Win8.x copy, it will let you get a downloadable version. I haven't personally tested this from experience, but I believe there was a method of using the win8.1 setup box software to create an iso file. I've also seen references to purchase agreement iso download links. Chances are that come the availability date of this win8.1 update, it will be able to be downloaded in a more streamlined personal iso version. I've already mentioned what you can do to apply and capture this install.esd into a wim version and vice versa in the post #2. This is handy for applying future updates that don't get a separate build such as internet explorer updates, flash player updates, security fixes; etc. The methods listed above are the ONLY two ways to get a usable install.esd file from any sort of Microsoft download service. Every other install.esd file will be user-made.
so.. what can we do with install.esd? can i replace install.wim on my Windows 8 Iso to get win8.1 installer?
Not "exact" size as it appears there is some data changed in the decrypted file somehow i made a smartversion patch from encrypted.esd to decrypted.esd, the result was around 5 MB
Do you speak about "Store download" or "Microsoft download tool" ? With download of "Microsoft download tool" the encrypted "WinPayload.esd" and decrypted "WinPayload.esd.decrypt" are exact same size. That ofcourse is correct.
I'm speaking about Store download but i thought the other one will be similar, after all, the downloaded encrypted .esd is the same in both procedure
DISM.exe /Apply-Image /ImageFile:E:\win81\wim\install.esd /Index:1 /ApplyDir:E:\win81\mount and this is result An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format is my command line wrong or is the esd file bad ?
I don't believe we can apply those esd files. They are in an encrypted format with the end of file chopped off.
using Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8.1 del the esd file I had and d/l WindowsBlue-ProESDwithApps-64bit-English-X1897213.esd with the same out come guess iam just screwed
ADK dism version doesn't support applying ESD and directly downloaded ESD are encrypted and cannot be applied
