hi guys....after having integrated the update windows8.1-kb4054566-x86.cab, windows update requires it. what's the problem?
I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Update, just to see what updates are still needed. I'm not gonna take it far so the things that I've noticed are: The CUs that are needed are: the December 2014 update rollup (KB3013769), July 2016 update rollup (KB3172614) + July 2016 Servicing Stack update (KB3173424), August 2016 update rollup (KB3179574) and the current 2018-09 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 (KB4457129). The 2018-09 Flash player update (KB4457146) and the same month's .Net Rollup. The "bad" thing is that they still haven't integrated even more of the standalone patches that are up to 112 critical and about 10 in total optional. An older IE CU update is still asked (and installable) by WU (KB3185319) and an older time zone update (KB3077715). Many newer timezone updates why are not been offered? Some that I have just downloaded manually like the KB4339284 for example, are installable. The "Remove software related to the Windows 10 free upgrade offer" (KB3184143) is also required even on a clean system, that hasn't being offered the GWX updateds not to mention installed. Pitty.
Rollup != Cumulative They canceled the idea of incorporating old patches in Monthly Rollup likely they decided that it's not worth the risk These 4 updates can only be superseded by WU metadata, so will be requested when "Security" Monthly Rollup is not installed or active IE KB3185319, Defender KB3038936, timezone KB3162835, UCRT KB3118401 KB3162835 is the last timezone update that reached WU, newer ones are catalog-only, because Monthly Rollup already have them While KB3184143 kills GWX, it also contain updated system components (specially explorer.exe)
Too bad. So we stay with all those standalone updates... The only one that is asked, is for IE KB3185319, after the monthly rollup is installed and the older timezone update KB3077715. I knew that those timezone updates where included in these rollups but wondered why all the previous can be installed too. As for the GWX didn't knew about the newer explorer.exe version (now I love it). (Thanks for all the info)
Slowly, month after month, the total number of required updates decreases, although this is not happening each month. It can be seen after running Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) or the equivalent dism command which is Code: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup The reason for this decrease is that old updates are superseded and replaced with the CU rollup. So the net effect is still that old updates are included in the CU, but this happens naturally and not forced as it was the initial intention.
