I'm posting the link for reference purposes ... omg ... people can always do their own research if they want SQL Server 2012 = 3 Years ESU maximum and no further extension (Azure only or Premium Assurance) so most likely it will be same for Server 2012 and 2012 R2 really bad trolling attempt on your part ...
Not sure what you mean by that ? M$ has already removed the Client-specific packages, I don't think they really can do more than that. Installing the newer LCUs on Client requires extensive modding and a patched SSU. This allows to install the updated Server packages as if it were Client packages. It is not without risks and probably only advanced users will attempt this anyway.
What I meant is, why haven't they outright blocked installation on non-Server? As I understand it, you can run the installer normally and then crash and burn on the next reboot.
Well, they've done the same with Windows Server 2025 update packages to separate from Windows 11 24H2 starting with January 13, 2026 LCU (heavily reduced from 4GB to 1.8GB). I have no idea what will happen if you install the latest Server 2025 LCU on Windows 11 24H2. But who knows But yea I still have no idea why they didn't detect the client to block the installation before it bricks your Windows. This is also going to be affected on Server 2016 and 2019 soon. But it didn't happen right now.
