KB2880289 IE Flash Has anybody had any problems with Windows 8.1? I had problems during setup if I disabled Search feature with dism, also had setup error during OOBE connecting to my wifi (had to use lan) and problems with live tiles not updating (dcom error in event viewer)
Both of those have separate functions. The first is to remove Windows Search 'completely', in essence doing the same thing as removing it through the Windows features section. This disabled indexing and removes the search boxes in Explorer etc. To retain the search boxes but disable indexing, you leave the feature enabled but you disable the service as murphy78 suggested (or simply through services.msc). This is preferable since the benefit comes from disabling the indexing component, not the ability to do quick and easy searches. There have been arguments in the past that you can install a third party program to do the same thing, but that is defeating the purpose! and having the ability to search through Explorer etc does not impede performance whatsoever and has imperceptible, if at all, impact on memory.
Alternatively you could try to do a dism /online /disable-feature during the setupcomplete.cmd phase. I'm trying to help problem solve here. I don't know what method people are doing, or if they are doing it correctly. For all I know, he could have disabled the parent feature of search but not all the child features, such that adding an "/all" portion might help
True! I was actually implying that disabling the service is a better option than disabling the search feature entirely, since the reasoning behind disabling search is to disable indexing and other performance hindering aspects, which can be done simply by disabling the service. All that disabling the feature does is reduce useability with absolutely no other benefit . Actually the best way to modify the offline image is to load the registry hive, go to the services registry key and change the 'start' parameter there for search from 3 to 4. That is the best way to do it for an offline image.
I had the same problem twice now and I reinstalled the whole OS because even the search stopped working. but I can't tell the reason, since it only happens after a restart.
